Tamron 70-200 Extremely dark, Why?

I just got a Tamron 70-200 2.8 with Nikon mount and a nikon to canon adapter. When I attach it to the camera everything is extremely dark. There is no aperture ring on the lens and the on camera exposure dial doesn't work because the lens is a nikon. I use a Nikon 50 1.4 as my main lens and have never had a problem with that, but that has an aperture ring. I've went through all the menus and can't figure out how to fix it. Is there something i'm missing?

Here is an example of what i'm getting. The first picture is with the stock lens at 135mm, 5.6, 6400 iso and 60 shutter. The second is with the 70-200 at 135mm, exposure reads 00, 6400 iso and 60 shutter.

Since the Tamron is a Nikon mount lens, it will not communicate electronically through the adapter with the Canon EOS 7D body. Usually, when electronic aperture lenses such as the Tamron are used without an electronic connection, they close up to the smallest aperture - usually f/16 or f/22.

I believe that's what you are seeing here - your lens will be closed to its minimum aperture when mounted on the Canon 7D. That is, unless someone makes an electronic mount adapter...and I have no idea if they do.

Thanks, guess I need to get rid of the lens then. I bought Nikon so that I could use it on my Letus extreme w/Nikon adapter, gh1 with Nikon adapter, and the 7d. I also bought a canon adapter for the GH1 but I suppose a Canon version of the tamron would have the same problem on the gh1. So I guess I have to buy primes if I want to use a lens on different cameras.

Why did you buy a lens with no aperture ring? I'd NEVER do that.

So long as it is Canon EF mount, it doesn't make a huge difference unless you need to rack aperture. The control is simply on the camera body instead of the lens.

But I do prefer having the manual ring.

For what it is worth, I don't believe the Letus offers an electronic contacts. The Panasonic offers the 4/3 mount contacts, and the 7D offers Canon contacts. My suggestion? Buy manual primes and manual zooms. Yes, manual zooms do exist.

Do you know of any manual zooms off the top of your head that are any good, within the same price range of the tamron?

I didn't realize it would be a problem. I could be mistaken, but the only lenses that seem to have aperture rings are primes, and I was trying to a get a lens with a little more flexibility.

Here are a few dozen used manual aperture zooms:

Remember that these are generally older lenses, so read reviews. Optics have changed over the years and what was once a great lens may no longer be so great. And there have always been duds.

Personally, I don't know much about zooms. Prefer the primes.

Cool, thanks. I just looked through those lenses and they all seem to be a little too slow so i'll probably end up going with primes.

I dont know your lens but there is hope..

the ap on nikon style lenses is controlled by a little lever that interfaces with the camera

wiggle the lever and you will see the iris opening and closing

if you are a cheapskate like me make a little triangle of card from a cereal box and jam the lever open so the lens is stuck open at 2.8

if you have more money go to 16-9 net and by a G Lens adapter
