Tamron 17-50mm Non-VC for video

Does anyone use the Tamron 17-50mm Non-VC for video work? It's quite a bit cheaper than the VC unit, and the image quality is said to be better.

The only problem is there's no image stabilization built-in. I'm wondering if this would make a difference when using a shoulder mount or Glidecam. Anyone have experience with this?

LOVE this lens! Shoot mostly from sticks or slider but occasionally do Handheld and steadycam too with it. Its my most used lens.
See footage below, all done with this lens!

I've got a 17-50 VC and so a it doesn't seem quite as sharp as equivilent canon glass, but I'm still testing.

Re: VC vs non-VC. I read the review that found the Non-VC to be softer , but then searched a lot more reviews and some had it the other way around - perhaps even more - so I went with the VC. It looked to me that the differences might have been due to individual lens variations rather than VC vs non-VC.

BTW - Is there additional compression on Vimeo samples? I assume there is and thus don't take examples of sharpness too seriously, but maybe I'm wrong.

It's a fantastic lens for the money. You generally don't want IS on when using glidecam or stabilizer anyways. It will fight it.

I love mine, and keep it on the majority of ht etime.

I got mine used on ebay for like $260 or so.

For the money it cant be beat, and its very versatile as well

I have the Tamron non VC, works great in video mode but when I take a still I get
Err 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. clean the lens contacts.
It's the only lense I have that does this.

Yeah, I get the same thing on my 7d. Thank god its not just me :-)

Wow. If this is a widespread issue, I'll definitely avoid the non-VC version. I'll be using the lens for stills as well as video.

I have a 5 year old sigma 24-70 F2.8 lens that worked on my Nikon D100 but was temperamental on my D300 which I put down to newer camera tech. Perhaps the non VC tamron is having the same issues with newer canons like the 7d and t2i/550d. I was tempted to buy the non VC lens but after reading this I'm not sure.

Yes I'm confused too... Does it get an error automatically with the non-
VC and T2i/7D ? It's the first time i hear about that so far...

Alright so I'm probably one of the right guys, because I got the Tamron 17 50 non vc and a shoulder mount. The lens itself, is AWESOME, and the shoulder mount will minimize the movement to a totally acceptable little movement (which is actually sometimes used in movies).

Actually, I'd never shoot video with a VC/IS. It gives that awkward movement I don't like, plus it emits a sound that some microphones pick up.

EDIT: Oh and I use the T2i and have 0 problems.

Hi Cube,

What mount shoulder are you using and how do you like it ? Just curious...

Alright, I think i'm going to go with the non-VC

Thanks !

Tamron vs. Sigma

Tamron vs. Sigma

I have been looking at the Tamron 17-50 and the Sigma 18-50 for my T2i.
Outside of the wider focal length, what makes people choose the Tamron
over the Sigma? Having been brought up on Zeiss and Canon lenses, the
reversed direction of the focus barrel (reversed to me, anyway) makes me
think i'll drive mysefl crazy with the Tamron when focusing on the fly-- I am
curious to know why more people seem to favor the Tamron.
