Tally System

Is there a standalone tally system available(i.e. one that does not connect to a switcher since we wont be using a hardware switcher)?

Thanks,
Joe

A "tally system" is generally a mix of multiple parts. Often the video switcher's/mixer's tally outputs are connecting to tally inputs on respective cameras & monitors.

What sort of a switcher are you using? ... do you hope to still have the tally automatically follow the switcher, or operated manually by someone for example pushing a button?
Also, what type of cameras/monitors (locations for the tally lights) do you have?

Im using an HPX170, DVX100B, and a DVC20. I was hoping to have the tally system be manual since I'm going to be using Telestream's Wirecast instead of a hardware switcher. The monitors are nothing special, just whatever is attached to the camera. The tally lights will be attached to the lens hoods of the cameras.

I don't mind having to run an extra wire to each camera for the lights, as long as I can actually have the lights.

My backup plan was to just build my own system with some LEDs, some cables, and some light switches from Home Depot. ;)

Thanks,
Joe

That's probably the simplest solution.

Indeed. Our first live-switched system used outboard LEDs on the cameras and separate wiring, etc. Then we built out own clones of the Clearcom intercom system (instructions on my website) and used the "call" lights for tally. We modified our switchers to put out the tally signal automatically (Panasonic WJ-AVE5 and Videonics MX-1).

But then we got tired of fooling around with consumer cameras and got some cameras with proper CCUs which have built-in tally, call, and intercom.

One trick I've dabbled a little with that works with some of those pro-sumer video mixers (like the Panasonic AVE series & MX-20, 50, and the Videonics units) if you are only using a couple of cameras is to use the audio channels & tone generators & detectors to rig in a tally path. Of course that doesn't work if you actually use the audio sections of those mixers.

What is your website?

Ahh cheers,

Didn't realize about having their website on their profile, alot of people put their website address in the signature so i didn't give it a second though.
