Talent versus 'mud, jello and banding'

screw you john, if i want to believe the shooter had a magical baby dragon nesting inside his camera that allowed him to achieve such flawless video...then that's what i'll believe...until someone proves to me there isn't such a mythological creature...it's just like your opinion man.

That was a pretty harsh response to a very sensible post.

A magic baby dragon inside your camera usually aggravates rolling shutter....but it burns off the magical "coating" on your sensor and prevents banding.

Apparently Panasonic are recalling a batch of cameras with those faulty magic dragons... my dragon is just peachy :nads:

So this is really something? Mud on some cameras and not on others? Some Gh1s can pan/whip in 1080p with no issues what so ever? I doubt this...

No.

What it really comes down to this this: there is no accurate way to predict how a codec as complicated as this is going to behave in any given situation. We know some general overall guidelines...but sometimes things just work, and sometimes they don't, even in similar situations. Add in the aesthetic subjectivity and you can't really make any claims about a single camera of the same model being different than another.

That is a blanket statement that shouldn't be made. The GH1 records shallow-DOF and low-light footage much better than consumer camcorders. It has its flaws, but to blanketly declare that a consumer camera does better is not fair.
You mean, the camera section of um... the camera produces shallow DOF, which is much easier to encode than long DOF stuff produced by tiny consumer-cam chips? Sure. I can do shallow DOF on my 1/4-inch camera too if I step really far away, and the encoding is equally good as on the GH1, or so I think. I don't know how GH1 is "much better" but then again, no one actually compared a consumer Pana to the GH1 in identical conditions.

Actually this discussion is becoming pointless. The only person that has to be satisfied with how his camera is performing is actually me. When I got the D90 for video and stills I quickly found out that the video side of it was not working for me and spoke against its capabilities in this forum as many know. I still shoot stills with my D90 every single day of the week. The GH1 on the other hand has not given me any problem whatsoever while shooting 1080p and that is what I have been saying in the forum so far. The final conclusion is that if the GH1 is not working for you after trying endlessly then go out and buy the 7D or 5D and go to their respective forums and complain after they are not working for you.

Isn't that a scary thought?

Working for me just fine, I love this camera.

I dunno why you're so fired up, buddy, but you should relax. I love this camera too. I've had a few issues with panning and mud, but I think I'll just do 720 and conform when I need a lot of motion in the camera. That works for me. Still the best indie solution imo.

I realize all these tests and problems have been all about 1080. But I have a 720 clip that demonstrates just about everything that could be a no-no in 1080. The point being that if you absolutely don't need 1080, then a lot if not all of these problems can be solved by shooting 720 (which I've read scales up fairly well to 1080).

Now, this clip isn't exactly something I want to showcase on Vimeo so I've password protected it. Check it out and see if you don't agree that just about everything that has been discussed as problematic is featured in this one clip.

This has been processed to 24p?

Yeah I've been experimenting doing that with Neoscene. Looks like it could intercut with 1080p 24p pretty well. Just use that for your action/quick pans, use 1080p for lockdowns/cus/beauty shots.

Hey Kettle... you're black!

just kidding, I think the other day you needed some of your own advice.

I'm delighted with the camera. It has changed my life, and that is no understatement. No way I would be traveling around with our Sony V1, and we actually bought an A1 for mobility. This is a farrrrr better option and so much cheaper.

To me the negative threads only have a purpose when stating workarounds or making new observations to keep in mind.

All I said yesterday was to stop criticism and give me advice and I didn't want an argument.

Yup, to me that looks very muddy. If I was to use the camera as a run around point and shoot, it would make me think seriously about buying it... but I dont use it that way. (Not saying you do). I use the camera for more carefully composed shots that utilize depth of field... if ever a forrest shot is necessary, I'll be taking that into mind and probably focussing on something in the foreground to blur out the greenage, or using another camera.

There was ZERO criticism... only advice you didnt need. Thats what happens when you ask for advice, you get the good and the bad. Nothing to get upset about though... Not everything is personal, in the same way John seemed very relaxed but correctly tired of repetitive critical threads.

muddy? we're obviously not talking about the same "mud" cause I didn't see any in that footage.

Mud? The random splotches of blurred color in areas of detail...?

Yes, there was plenty. Wouldn't be happy using that commercially.
In that 720 passworded video up there? I didn't see any "mud" that is the result of a whip pan or zoom that I see in 1080p.
