T5i announced

it looks exactly like the T4i, with a new lens and a different sticker
unless they designed a new 18mpix sensor that is a lot better than the old 18mpix sensor: yaaaawn....

I'm always keeping an eye on what Canon decides to roll out next in their budget DSLRs, but history has sort of shown us that it will be an incremental upgrade that likely won't have any effects on video quality or IQ.
The T4i's Digic5 chip was expected to solve our low resolution resampling and reduce moire and aliasing due to the extra speed now available (it is widely believed that the Digic 4 chips weren't fast enough to properly resample the frame in real time, so the HD Movie mode would resort to line-skipping resample methods).

...only, it didn't. It may have helped noise at higher ISO, which is still really great, and given some longer recording options, but I feel like the HD image quality has mostly stayed the same since the T2i. It seems that each new body gets some bells and whistles, like flip out displays, crop modes (that they later take away?), autofocus, etc. but never addresses things like DR or resolution.

Interested in seeing what happens, but not getting my hopes up for anything exciting. Especially after reading the release notes so far. I don't think it will compare with the GH3 or new Nikons any more than the current lineup.

Yay a new body with a stoneage sensor woohoo! How do we know it's the same tired old sensor? Simple: marketing knobs wouldn't order a new sensor that doesn't have more megapixels.

I'm so over Canon and their bulls*%t. Anyone who knows me knows I'm brand agnostic, the Nikon D5200 blows every Canon APS-C body away, how do I know? cause I'm shooting with it and leaving my 5D MKIII at home!

My first day with the D5200

There's a couple of issues I have with the D5200 compared to the Canons: it doesn't have magic lantern, it has a bit more rolling shutter than the canons, and the LCD face isn't flat so a z-finder frame doesn't fit flush, but it beats the Canons at everything that's really important that there's no workarounds for.

Their new digic 6 in the point and shoot do have 1080 60P in the specs. I guess this is what to expect with the 70D and higher.

If they don't get a better sensor with faster read-out time, a faster processor won't produce more DR, or get rid of aliasing, moire and rolling shutter.

I wouldn't expect them to bring out a shiny new sensor in the rebel line, it would make more sense to release it on the 7D2 or 70D. But that has to happen soon, if people switch brands then just getting on par with the competition won't bring them back. Not that I care, anyway: I sold my Canon 6 months ago and I've been happily shooting Sony ever since; my next project will be shot on a BMC.

Well, once again, obviously they aren't focused on bringing higher quality video to the rebel line, at least

Guess we shouldn't expect them to?

Come on guys, what do you expect?
Since Canon has a dedicated large sensor videocamera line now AND a "Cinema" branded DSLR line, they will NEVER EVER again offer the same video capabilities in an entry level DSLR.
Besides that, many people skipped the 7D in favor of a t2i/550D when it was clear, it a) offered the same video functionality and b) could benefit from the amazing MagicLantern hack.
So also among the various DSLRs, video will be treated as a "full feature" from now on, that has to be "regulated" somehow (like FPS with photos) to make the higher end models more appealing.
My guess is well see the "70D" bummed up to the 7Ds former entry price and a "7DII" with headphone jack and the MIIIs codec just under the 6Ds price tag...

Lo0ks Like I have to get a fricken powershot to get 1080 60p from Canon, lmao. Wonder if gini rig has a powershot cage to hide the damn thing.haha

I don't think reasonable people expected a whole heck of a lot, but.....
This camera, even on a photo level is the most incremental/useless update of a rebel I can recall
The T2i jumped way ahead over the T1i with a lot of video functionality/resolutions and new sensor etc.
The T3i added a new articulating screen and a zoom function for video and some other things
The T4i added touchscreen capability, new processor, and new AF capability in video mode to work with the STM lenses
The T5i adds...........wait for it..............the abillity to preview art filters in live view. Wow. Go Canon

This is the tiniest glimmer of hope that this cam has a new sensor. It shows the ISO range moving up to 12,800 (25,600 exp) from 6400 on the T3i and T4i. Ok, I'm not holding my breath, but there could be some image improvements if they've actually decided to do a new 18mpixel sensor. Again, knowing Canon, it's just a pipe dream :)

Cheers,
Pete

When you look at it from the huge general consumer market and not the tiny DVXuesr group it make corporate sense. You have 6 billion people out there who don't know which end of the camera to look into or at. Canon repackages electronic components they have stockpiled my the millions and release "The smallest DSLR ever made" The Rebel 5i easily confused with the 5D and they will probably sell a million units for a few billion dollars. Just a guess but probably not far off.

I expect I'll continue beating my 3 year old 60D to death.

This is the first time I'm actually considering Nikon though. The d5200 has 1920x1080 @ 60fps. That could be nice.

New sensor likely wont be introduced till 7dmk2 or 70d.

so we still don't have a dslr that can shoot proper 1080p in 60fps, that doesn't cost a arm and a leg?

And the 5N too. But they're not technically DSLRs, and I'm not completely sure about the definition of "proper" here...

In fact, Christian, I am always amazed with some naiveness we can read here at times...

Cheers,

E. :-)
