T5i and 70D

Hello guys,

For filmmaking purposes, do you think its worth to give that extra money for a 70D over a T5i?

How soon do you need a camera?

Canon is supposed to be announcing a new 7DII in late August/September for Photokina. We are all looking for a new sensor from that, which should also bne included in other, lower level models.

Otherwise I think the 70D sensor and the especially the Dual Pixel Auto Focus are decent upgrades over the T5i. The DPAF especialy seems very accurate, even in low light, and good for tracking. The senosr is supposed to be a bit better at higher ISO.

My "benchmark" price for the 70D is the $1,184 net cost at Adorama or B&H for the 70D, 18-135 mm STM, and the Canon Pro-100 printer after rebate.

You can sell the 18-135 mm for about $300 new. You can keep the printer, or sell the inks for at least $100. Or a bit more to sell teh whole printer.

So $1,185 - $300 - $100 = $785 net, which is a pretty good price. That should help to offset some of the net cost if you do sell to upgrade in a year or similar. Or try to buy a new body (BNIB) from someone who is splitting the kit, but I wouldn't pay more than about $850 for it.

Otherwise if you have a T3i or similar and no major projects, you could wait to see what develops.

I am shooting a T4i, which I really love. I have wanted a 70D for the DPAF. I almost bought one of those deals, but I am going to wait to see if we are really going to get a new sensor from Canon.

Do a google search on the DPAF. There are some good reviews and videos available. It is a nice technology!

I also shoot Nikon. Forst a D3200, now a D7100 that I just bought. But I really want to stay with Canon, especially for the DPAF. And I love my Canon glass, especially the 24-70 II and 70-200 II. I only took 670+ shots on the D3200 in 2 years. I find that I am very rarely DR limited in my images, and the T4i is a very nice camera. I love it as much as my older 1DsII from 10 years ago, that cost more than 10x as much,

Good luck!
Michael

I have a ton of Canon and Nikon work under my belt. Finally sold the Canons, the Nikon image of its newest gen (even the D7000) ust kept blowing Canon away for me.

unadog thanks a lot your reply. I'll certainly google search DPAF and read about it later today. But for video, do you prefer Nikon or Canon? Thanks!

Michael Carter, i agree with you when you say that image quality in Nikon 7100 is better than Canon 70D, but the big drawbacks in Nikon 7100 and not very good for video are that it doesn't have an articulated LCD and the fact that
you can't control exposure when you're in live view. And that's why it's been taking me so long to decide which one to buy.

That's certainly an issue for some folks. All my lenses have aperture rings and anytime I'd need an articulating screen I'm likely on a crane or using a monitor. Yet to have a "wish this thing roatated" moment, but if I can't get a loupe on the thing, it's a monitor every time. I even bring high-powered readers with me, but I just don't trust focusing on the tiny LCDs.

Won't be long til aperture ring glass is a thing of the past for many manufacturers I imagine... hopefully by that time Nikon will have fixed the aperture issue (and beefed up their codec) or there will be something like a BMD cam with a super-35/APS-C sensor, raw, prores, 60p, etc. Really wishing for the DSLR days to end for me before too long. Mos of the stuff i shoot Nikon, I'd prefer to be shooting raw.

Thank you Michael!

Well the aperture thing in live view is really a stupid thing, i dont understand why they did it like that.

I think i'll go for Canon mostly because of that. Image quality wont be as good as Nikon but i think it still great.
