T3i Video Focus compared to Pictures

When I am taking pictures I can put the subject fully in focus and have everything else out of focus, yet in video, the out of focus isn't nearly as out of focus as it is on the image settings. Why is that, and how can I make it match the settings of the pictures.

Thanks.

The DOF and focal plane are exactly the same whether you are in stills mode or video mode.

Perhaps you are only noticing the out of focus areas more on the still images because the resolution is higher - the sharper picture means non-sharp areas are far more noticable.

You must not be using the same settings. You're probably using a higher aperture in video mode than you are using in stills mode. Open the aperture as much as you can (lower numbers=more open) and this should give you a more shallow DoF.

Can you tell us your settings? Also are definitely sure you have the same exact settings between shooting video and photos.

I agree with above, you are probably noticing just because of the higher resolution of the pics.

Yeah that's what I was gonna say.

also, if you are using the 3x crop mode, the DoF becomes that of a 3x higher f/ setting (i.e. a 3x crop mode video at f/2.8 will have the same DoF of an f/8 still or standard video)
