T3i footage not showing?

I imported the footage from my T3i card using a card reader and to my computer. To save space, I later moved it to an external harddrive.

I have viewed the footage before and it displayed fine. Now, when I try to view it, it shows up as black; no video, no audio, though it "plays" through the run time (of course, just black and no audio).

I can see the clips as thumbnails in the folder and they display as thumbnails (I can see different thumbnails relating to each clip), but again, when played in Quicktime... Nothing.

Why is this?

EDIT: I can view it on VLC, but not QuickTime. Is this going to cause any issues when I get to editing?

Need to know more about your computer specs. If you can view it in VLC the file is likely OK.

But in order to help you we need to know what kind of processor your computer has, OS, and what software you intend to edit in.

Sounds like a quicktime failure. If your NLE relies on QT to decode, you're going to have a problem.

The good news is, as Bruce pointed out, the files are probably not corrupted since it plays in VLC.

A quick workaround would be to use a transcoder like 5DtoRGB which uses its own decoder (like VLC, it does not rely on quicktime) and converts into a format of your choice. The problem is, I think the formats it offers are other codecs in a Quicktime wrapper, so if QT is failing on your system it might still be a problem. But maybe worth a try?

Ultimately, there may be a deeper problem with your OS or software. Again, without any additional specs it is impossible to troubleshoot.

From what I gather it played properly until you moved it to an external hard drive. As a test, I would copy the files back to your internal hard drive to see if it plays correctly.

If it does work when you play it from your internal drive, maybe your external drive has a problem or the transfer rate is too slow, something like that.
