General T3i: Flashing image?

Hey guys.

I've noticed that on some of the stuff that I've been shooting with my T3i, the image gets darker and then goes back to proper exposure a few frames later.

All auto functions are turned off and I'm running Magic Latern Unified port.

Any ideas?

What lens?

Oh right. Should've posted that. I use a set of Nikkor primes (24,35,50,55,85,and 135)

The camera is on full auto, but I'll try and upload an example.

may be light flicker (as explained int he link I posted above) or the camera changing the shutter speed or ISO because it's in auto

Go to full manual. Set shutter to 1/63rd for 30p and 1/48th for 24p (with ML). If you are in PAL land it's 1/50th and 25p. Lock that down then adjust ISO and apurture manually to taste. If you still have flickering you're cam is broken.

Auto settings for video just don't work very well IMHO.

Cheers,
Pete

Oh shoot. I didn't mean to say full auto. Its at full manual. Is it a possibility my cam is busted?

Its possible. Does it do this with the kit lens as well? That doesn't sound right at all. And no, I truly doubt it has anything to do with Magic Lantern.

I wiped off ML from the cards I was using and viola! No more flashing image. I don't think it was ML nor the lighting I was under.

This is honestly one of the weirdest camera problems I've ever encountered. I'm just glad its fixed!

weird- especially when shooting with Nikon primes.
It looks kind of like when aperture changes automatically, but it can't be if you are using manual f-stop rings. And you're sure the camera is on full manual... might be a body issue.

Absolutely sure. The only problem I could think of is the Canon-Nikon adapter ring that I bought (it has electronic contacts) but the lenses are manual (most are 30-40 years old.)

Oooooohh.... you got one of the AF confirmation ones? I think the EOS mount has trouble adapting electronically to anything that isn't native. Dumb ring adapters work best, but there's a chance your adapter is shorting a connection and sending the wrong signals to the camera. Try one of the F-mount ones with no electronic contacts?

I think thats what it is. I'll try my friend's tomorrow and report back.

So I returned the T3i to Amazon. It ended up being a defective body.

Unfortunate, but I'm glad to have a new one coming soon!
