T2i - Yellow Banding On Video

I've only had my T2i for about a month and an extended shoot in Haiti (the worst hell-hole I've ever visited) has postponed testing of the new camera. I bought it for video production and the few video tests I've done have gone fine - I bumped them into Avid and the footage looked great.. Today I brought the camera into an editing studio where I was doing some freelance work to show a friend of mine. I shot a few clips and, again, everything looked okay. Later, I pulled the camera back out and was fooling around with it when I noticed the LCD had these yellowish brown lines running horizontally across the screen. Two lines, one about a third of the way down and the other two-thirds down. Darker in the middle and fading off around the edges. it looked like someone had airbrushed the lines across the screen. I recorded and the lines showed up on the video pkayback. Now panicked and sweating heavily, I whet into still mode and opend the LCD - no lines. Back to video mode - the lines were back and appeared to be getting darker. Since I bought the camera at Micro Center and had a three year warrenty, I called and they said to bring it back and they would replace it. Took it in, turned it on - no lines. Shot some clips in the store - video looked great.

Checked it again tonight and everything is still okay.

I'm wondering if anybody has had this problem? I thought my screen was fried or the video mode had failed in the camera. I'm worried the problem may reappear at just the wrong moment and I might lose a client over it. I can't get it replaced if I can't prove anything is wrong. Any thoughts?

Set your shutter speed on 1/60th and never change it. Those lines show up when you shoot under fluorescents or HMIs with a shutter speed other than 1/60th.

Aha! As I said, I'm just learning the ropes with this camera and my video camera expertise is not helping in certain areas. I should have realized there was a simple answer to my complicated question. Thanks Barry.

It's a very, very, very common question. I wish the answer would spread virally, that people should always be aware of the potential for banding on CMOS camcorders (because it happens on ALL CMOS CAMCORDERS, including the EX1/EX3, HPX370, and Red One) and that we really, really just have to get used to using 1/60th (in NTSC territories) or 1/50th (in PAL territories) and just abandon this idea of using 1/50th in NTSC as a "default". It can only be used by someone who knows exactly what they're doing and understands the type of light they're shooting under and knows exactly whether it will cause an issue or not.

Thanks for sharing Barry. I was going to answer the same. The first time I saw that I was like what the heck then remembered it happened on the old faithful DVX under certain frame rates. I agree should be widespread. By answering you are spreading the knowledge.
