It was back in 2007 I first discovered the XH-A1 lens hood can used with Canon WD-H43 and Raynox WA lens making the HV30 looks so awesome! I bought a Sigma 18-250mm Lens. It also has a 72mm front diameter. I tried the XH-A1 lens hood on it.. it is a snug fit! The screw on the hood can also be tightened. Looks great!!

It's kinda funny, i can break down each piece of that kit and know what it is and how much it costs and show that its not an astronomical price or anything. But there is something about the whole thing put together that makes for a really impresive professional looking rig.

hahah! My ultimate goal is to have the whole rig on rail, with follow focus and external monitor. Those things are in mail on the way. Right now, it's a cool setup. This is not meant to be handheld =)

The Sigma lens come with the circular pedal style lens hood. But I like the rectanglar looking of lens hood. Makes it looks like a camcorder than camera ... =)

hehe.. it is not the same anymore.. it's morphing

That looks AWESOME I think.

I don't have an XH-A1...how does the hood attach? Is it threaded and attach just like a filter?

G.

You can order the XH-A1 lens hood at Canon parts department. I also have it for sell too. But it's cheaper (about $25) to buy from Canon.

The hood fit to the Sigma lens perfectly. It fits just like it is made for the lens. There're thread that matches on both side. I just snug it in, slide to rotate. Then there is a small screws on the hood will tighten on the lens hood. it is just a perfect fit like fitting to the Xh-A1. No DIY is need.

also, when I zoom or adjust focus, the lens hood stay in that orientation. It's just so cool. On top of that, the sigma lens has a good range for general use. I am loving this setup =)

i'm just about to buy a t2i. i'm a video journalist and will use it handheld and on tripod. I think your setup looks awesome and still not too pricey. this would impress my clients.... could you maybe tell me approximately how much each part of your setup is so i have a good starting point?

Would this work with any other lenses or is only that Sigma 18-250 made such that this works?

Just for "professional look" sake, if someone made a rectangle lens hood like this with different thread options I think people might would buy it. I know I would. I know back in the day when all I had was a crappy ole SD DV handycam, I bought off ebay a plastic rectangle hood that attached via the lens threads. Of course the lens diameter was only 37mm. I wish I could find the same hood with 77mm threads.

Surely the XH-A1 hood is pretty light, so I can't see why a hood like that could not just attach via the various lens diameter threads. In any event, your rig looks very nice. Congrats on the discovery.

Only I'm returning the external monitor .. as it doesn't help much in focusing since it is in SD resolution. Also, mounting it with all the wires and additional battery adapter is a pain.

The lens hood is 72mm diameter. This sigma lens is also 72mm. I am just surprise (in a good way) to see the lens hood fits perfectly. Just like it is made for the Sigma. Also, then lens front part will rotate during focusing or zooming. It stays the same orientation. Otherwise, you can only use circular or flower pedal like lens hood. The rectangle lens hood give a feeling of camcorder instead of still camera.

I know what you talking about "professional look". I have my Canon HV30 which is a very capable camcorder. But I need to pimp it up so it won't look so consumer cam. That was the time I first found out the XH-A1 lens hood will fit to Raynox 6600 wide angle lens or Canon WD-H43 wide angle lens. It requires using double sided tape.

man, thanks a lot for breaking down the cost and providing me with links! Much appreciated and a valuable research base for me!!

Hey you are welcome..

I'm also getting a Lilliput monitor taking HDMI input and a mountable battery. Will provide some feedback soon.

I like this idea!
Even more funny that we strip of the normal lenshood from our prosumer cams to attach matteboxes to make them look more professional and now that same unwanted lenshood makes the tiny t2i look more professional...!
"Sadly" I´m a HVX shooter and the diameter is to big...

this is a must! Since I'm shooting weddings. I don't want to show clients i'm using entry DSLR.. although you and I and a lot of people know T2i's video is very capable and comparable to 5D/7D, most brides wont' know. If they see their uncle is using a camera better than mine, it would be difficult to get the next client. I did get a lot of new potential clients the day at the job =)

Taky... it was very cool of you to make this such a comprehensive and informative thread! Thanks.

I totally agree with the above statement about appearance at weddings... I had a 7D and returned it for a GH1, but now I'm adding a t2i for cam-B plus primary stills cam. It's uncomfortable to see cams in attendance that are better then the cam the "pro" is using. The 7D w/ a fat 2.8 lens definitely looks good, but not much better (if any) then what you've got there... It looks serious, and nice.

I'd like to argue that it doesn't matter, but I'd be kidding myself. I will definitely make sure my t2i doesn't look average.

Hey MattinSTL! I'd read so many of your posts that encouraged me to get a GH1. Thanks for doing all the great work.

However, I was late to the game and the Gh1 I ordered from Amazon was not hackable. I want to like the GH1.. but Panasonic don't think that way... haha.. instead of getting 3 GH1, I got 3 T2i. Together with all the battery grips, lens and everything, a lost to Panasonic because of their limited vision. I wish they will read my post =)
