T2i should have it's own area in the forum?

Fair enough. Perhaps the best solution should be a Newcomers thread? Some area where all of the "Whats the best lens/tripod" discussions can be held. That should clear up a lot of things

Isn't the point of these forums for answering questions? Lets see, theres now some confusion about AF between the 7D and T2i. If there were 2 subforums, that same question about AF would get brought up in both forums.

...after thinking for a minute I also realized this: Although the answer MAY be the same for both. What happens with IT'S NOT. This could be confusing.

7d does 'a'. T2i does 'a'.
7d does 'x'. T2i does 'z'.
7d does 'm'. ....uh I forget...does T2i do 'm' or is it 'n'?

In it's own area...no one cares which does what. Each just reports it's own.

Not really. Because if I don't own a 7D and I don't shoot with a 7D, why would I need to know that about a 7D? Likewise I'm not going to browse through 7D threads to learn about T2i features. If I've got a T2i question I'm going to ask it. Nothing would annoy me more than someone retorting back saying "why didn't you read this 7D thread?" I think it's obvious why I didn't read the 7D thread.

Look at all the 7D threads with 5D info, T2i info, GH1 info, and vice versa. Having multiple subforums won't stop that. Most of the retorts you're talking about have been pretty polite. "Check out this post here: " not "You idiot, info is here:". I don't see whats wrong with that. T2i threads will most likely have T2i in the title, same goes for 7D. Once in a while you'll get some spill over that applies to both but again, its not like thats not already happening anyway.

Also, how many 5D users are not interested in the 7D and vice versa? Just because they are different models does not mean their respective users aren't interested in the other. I think there are plenty of similarities between the T2i and 7D that having a single forum would be optimal and reduce overhead.

SIDE NOTE:

The ULTIMATE 7D NIGHTMARE:

We find out that there are NO DIFFERENCES WHATSOEVER. OUCH!

I'm smarter than that....I'm just saying. There will be differences, but I don't know how much T2i owners will care. (They'd have to find something sooo significant that it justifies a 200% investment.)

I appreciate the input. I've been wrong many times in my life. I'm not saying this is one...but I'm not saying it's NOT. Thanks for the perspective. It won't be the end of the world. AGAIN....(last time)....I was just trying to be polite to the 7d owners and have this happen somewhere else. No one has complained...so....maybe no one is bothered by this becoming the T2i area of the forum. I'll bet the comments about the T2i (in the 7d area) have quadrupled the 7d comments since the announcements. That's fine by me. (Honestly...I was just trying to help the community)

Then why not just have one big forum for every camera? I mean they all shoot video right? We'll just put the camera name in the title of each thread.

Sorry, not trying to be like that. I guess I just don't understand the argument here. It just seems obvious to me that a new camera would have a new forum for it. Especially if the camera is popular enough that it's getting a lot of discussion and questions about it.

People are going to ask the same questions over and over and over again. That's just the nature of forums. I used to run a few so I know how it goes. So even if someone titles a thread "7D - Can I autofocus with a follow focus unit attached" people who use a T2i might just skip over it and one day ask the same question about the T2i.

It just seems really lazy to me that someone can't go to a different sub forum to ask and read about a different camera.

Maybe I'm lazy but its a pet peeve of mine to have to track multiple forums especially across multiple sites. Different strokes I guess.

Well whatever happens it's out of our control anyway. The mods here decide how they want to organize things and we'll just need to go with that and respect that.

Perhaps the question to ask yourself is this: Would I want the 5d and 7d forums together? If so....cool. If not...the flood of newcomers using the T2i may NOT want to wade through all of the 7d stuff. (Then again, maybe it would help them?....I know...2 sides to each story)

Would you want the 5d with the 7d?

Hey roxics...that is true. HOWEVER: the reason I brought this up is because they'll have the SAME QUESTIONS THEMSELVES. Talking about this TOGETHER, OUT LOUD...will give them some help when making considerations. ....so I DO THINK your comments will help. (Eitherway)

Personally? Yes but I know that would be a bit much for a lot of others and I'll respect that.

Again, personally, I would just have "Canon vDSLR", "Nikon vDSLR", "Panny err vEVIL?".

Fair enough. Valid point of view. Thanks for input.

We don't know for sure as it hasn't hit the street yet, but lets assume for a moment that the video performance is essentially the same, as the nikon models are essentially the same across price points.

remember that these are stills cameras, and pro photographers are going to buy the more expensive model for whatever makes it a better stills camera. They can justify it because this is their bread and butter. Video is a tacked on feature, it doesn't need to be crippled on lower models, I wouldn't even be surprised if it got better as it trickles through the lower end consumer models as this will be a selling point for that market.

This is a video forum, so video features are what the discussion should be about. Early adopters always pay more for new tech than though's who wait it out. If it turns out that the video features of the t2i are essentially the same as the 7d, there is no reason why relevant questions shouldn't be in the same forum.

Relevant questions may include, how can I work around moire, rolling shutter etc.
Here is some cool footage I shot with this lens etc. and so on.

Early soft footage may be due to the cheap kit lens.

We are in interesting times when consumer technology is far outpacing pro technology just because of product lifecycles. What is it, 3-5 years for prosumer cameras. Consumer models every six months. Often the upgrade is purely cosmetic, but the fact that there are 6-10 consumer upgrades for every 1 pro upgrade speaks volumes for why the image quality is so close now.

Build quality, user interface, etc. will be better on pro cameras, but as we have seen before with the lowly hv20, there is no reason why with a little skill, superior results can result from cheap consumer products.

the flood gates are open, now shut up and make movies

Okay, first of all, we're not going to turn this place into a sprawling megaplex with a hundred different models from each manufacturer. That's just unmanageable and goofy.

Secondly, 95% of the questions that get asked, get asked equally. Does it matter if you're in the 7D or t2i forum when someone asks "is it 23.976 or 24.000 fps?" And we'd rather have that question asked once, and answered once, than have it asked in a dozen different forums. We prohibit cross-posting here, can you imagine how out-of-control it'd get if we had someone spamming the same question across five or six different camera sub-forums? No thanks.

Thirdly, the t2i hasn't even been released yet. How do you know it's not going to be a steaming pile of doggie doodoo that nobody with any self-respect would buy? Can it at least actually hit the market before we need to make a sub-forum for it?

Fourthly, at what point DO you draw the line? At the pace of introductions, follow through to the logical conclusion and three years from now we have, what, fifty sub-forums? How is that useful or helpful to anyone?

And if (as some people are arguing) the 550D/t2i are identical to the 7D in video, then why would anyone possibly want them separated?

So -- ultimately, whatever decisions get made will be made based on two criteria:
a) what's in the best interest of the forum, and
b) what's in the best interest of the users
(which is, basically, when you get right down to it, the same criteria actually)

But wouldn't it make sense for it to at least come out and appear on the market, before clamoring for subdividing the forum?

Isn't this always the case with new products? There's always going to be chatter before it comes out and its going to go where it fits best. You can't censor it. Sure we can't and shouldn't draw any conclusions before its out but we all know 1 of 2 things will happen. Subforum or same forum.

Agreed.

I also wouldn't mind if the online resource that I use is appropriately (not randomly) planned. This site has done a great job. I'm certain that it will dontinue to do a good job. This great community will continue to be such because we MINDFULLY ADD TO IT. I'm not sure this is such an opened/closed issue, BUT you make some good points. The D90 forum is serving for the D5000 and D300s. I can't help but think that some of that is due to the fact that no-one really bought into the D300s or the D5000. This EXACT same development with the 5d/7d resulted in a split. I recogize that the FRAME differences added to it....however....it appears that the real difference is that 100s of dvxusers BOUGHT the 7d and reported on it SPECIFICALLY. I'll be SHOCKED if this doesn't happen with the T2i. (Many DVXusers buying it, testing it, using it, reporting on it, questioning it, ETC.)

I sincerely HOPE (for all of our sakes) that what you are saying happens. I hope the differences are INDISTINGUISHABLE (and don't even need a different area to address differences). Hooray for us all if that is the case!

But wouldn't it make sense for it to at least come out and appear on the market, before clamoring for subdividing the forum?

Points well taken Barry. I'll repeat my original point.

The T2i has taken over the 7d area.

Is that OK with the 7d owners? Clearly from your perspective, it's fine. Cool. I just see T2i postings ALL OVER the forum and thought....hmmm....I wonder if this might clean things up a bit.

Obviously you feel that it decentralizes the site too much. Cool. Just wondering and thought it was a question that deserved to be asked. (Even before launch....because it is already spreading throughout the entire forum.)

If it does turn out to be a:

a steaming pile of doggie doodoo that nobody with any self-respect would buy

ALLLLLL THAT CHATTER has been pooped out throughout your entire site....instead of one area that could easily be avoided by all. Not right or wrong...just saying.

ps...it's good to know where you stand on this Barry. You have more experience managing info on this site than I'll ever have. ...as I mentioned...just a question/request.

As always happens, a new product comes out, there's a rush of info on it, and then it either becomes the "new thing" or it fades away. The D90 was the hottest thing going. Now you can hear the crickets chirp over in the Nikon forum.

We took our time to see whether the HMC40 deserved its own forum, or whether it could co-exist with the HMC150. The HPX170 and HVX200/200A have been happily and peacefully co-existing for a year or more.

Rather than calling out each specific camera model for its own forum, I'd be tempted to step back and call it "Canon DSLRs". If there's something substantially different about a particular model (such as the HPX500 2/3" interchangeable-lens P2 camera, vs. the HVX200 1/3" fixed-lens) then that warrants its own forum. But if it's the same basic thing, just cheaper -- why would it need or even want its own forum at that point?
