t2i picture style and post

Recently I filmed with the neutral style set to 0 -4 -2 0 (I believe that's what it is, the one philip bloom recommends) It seems the interview I filmed came out somewhat flat and also a bit soft. Since I'm not that experienced with color correction what might be a more suitable style of interviews and such where I'm not going for such a stylistic color grade, and just want a sharp image with natural colors. Thanks!

use default "neutral" then. dont mess with the features. or try default "faithful". The one you use is a dialed down setting for colour grading and they introduce the sharpness back into the image to whatever desire they want in post.

^ +1

The settings you see suggested here and around the net are for shooting flat on purpose. That way leaves you with the widest range to work with in post without clipping details if you plan to color correct.

If however you don't plan to CC, do what looks right in your viewfinder. There isn't really a magic setting that will work for all situations there, what you see is what you'll get. In general, Netural or faithful are the most accurate.

being a pretty bad colorist (I just cannot get natural skin tones out of flat footage with the tools I have at hand), I try to get the best possible image in the camera itself

currently this usually means using the portrait profile, with sharpness two notches above the minimum, saturation two notches down from the default value, and contrast changing between the minimum and the default depending on the shot (if I need more DR, I lower contrast; if I don't need it, I push contrast upwards)

a picture style is ALWAYS being used

do you mean "when a picture style with custom curves or color modifications is being used"? I think they do the same as with the default picture styles

so where are peoples video settings when they are using these picture styles, like the marvels_cine? Do you set everything to 0? or do the video controls, (that's what I'm calling them) get overridden?

Honestly, I'd say always make sure to get a correct white balance, skin tones can look horrible without that. Beyond that, the goal is to not bring out the red in skin (worst among white people) so I'd adjusting your settings to see if saturation, contrast, or color tone makes the most difference there. Many people say the "right" picture style changes with every location, so I'd first try to find the right one for outdoor work and start from there. Then florescent and orange lightings seem to be the next most common - I'd say build your three user settings around these three conditions.

You may also wish to customize your WB. Go to the menu and select WB Shift, I think it's called. Move the cursor an interval away from Magenta - probably the most hideous color and one that can make Miss America look like a severe burn victim.

You can save this in your Custom Settings (C1, C2, C3) so it is always on hand.

each pictures style comes with a preset for sharpness, contrast and saturation, which you can override in-camera, or leave at the default value for that particular picture style

it's the same for the picture styles that come with the camera (neutral, portrait, etc), and for the ones you download from the net or customize yourself in the picture style editor

Thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for.
