T2i constant record time.

I know that the T2i record in 29:59 clips. My question is this.....does anyone know if the camera will start recording with a new clip after the 29:59, or do you have to actually push the record button again? I would like to leave the cam as a vantage point camera and have it continuously record w/o having to keep pressing the button.

i don't think so. as i understand it: if the camera were to do that, it'll be considered a camcorder and canon would have to pay more taxes in europe.

also, i'm guessing the sensor would probably melt after a while.

i don't have one, though.

If you're working in 1080p, maximum clip length is around 12 mins. AFAIK, there's no seamless joining of clips.

The reason for the recording time limit is the FAT format of the memory cards which does not support file sizes larger than 4gb. The reason why they did not implement some kind of stitching like the GH1 has is because of heat reasons. You get about 12 minutes of 1080p.

I am going to shoot an interview next week. First time using the 7d for something like this. It will be about an hour long. Obviously I will stop the camera before this 12min mark to make a good break when someone is offcamera asking a question, that way I don't cut them off while talking. I am a little worried about overheating. I have done a test and kept rolling the camera and after it kept doing the 12min stops I pushed record immediately to see how long I could go without overheating. I got it to fill up my 16 gig card without any issues. which held about 49mins if I remember correctly.

Has anyone else attempted to shoot a long interview and had success?

Maybe I should start a new thread on this.

I did 18 interviews this week with the 7d... no heat issues.... was running around offices interviewing for 2 days straight...

Was my first test with the 7d... I used it as a second camera... the HPX 302 was the main camera which had Sennhieser G3 wireless set-up for audio...

A few takes went over 12 mins... just had to button off and on...

I did a tail slate ( just quickly standing in front of both cameras and doing a quick clap)..

Some of the shots were pretty good...

Cheers

I would think that the whole overheating problem would be more of a factor if the environment was hot. If your shooting in a cool or room temperature environment then overheating shouldn't be a problem... The only time I've ever seen the heat gauge pop up is when I was outside shooting in sunlight.

I'm planning on shooting interviews soon so it's good to know that the T2i is working out for you guys! :)

Wow looks great and great to hear it went so well. Care to share, what picture style? also what kind of light setup? Great work.

Hi.. if your referring to the shots above...

It was all available lighting... white balance set to daylight... mainly shot with the cheapest Canon 50mm lens I could buy ... @ f2.8 50sec.. ISO 100-320

The camera was set beside the 302.. on a small sony tripod...

Cheers
