T2i Audio & Magic Lantern

Hey Guys!

A few questions:

-Is Magic Lantern safe? If I brick by camcorder I'm screwed. I NEED TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY BIG CHANCE!
-Is Magic Lantern hard to manage?
-I have an $80 budge for audio. What should I get. I was thinking a monopod, azden smx-10 shotgun, and cable.

Hacking your camera i never completely safe....

$80??? advice is to save up. buying cheap crap gear is throwing your money away, save up and buy something worth keeping.

I've found ML to be extremely stable and wouldn't even think twice about it.

Then again, I helped write custom firmware for HTC phones and have hacked just about anything/everything I own (from my car stereo to my game systems, phones, cameras, you name it). I like the freedom of unlocking features the manufacturer didn't originally intend, and none of this stuff really intimidates me. That's just me though.

exactly... dishe ,

I believe your the exception not the rule.

no offence, but I think most folks that spent their hard earned cash barely affording the camera itself arent so willing to hack it, some are braver than others.

I think most people are just scared. These things aren't hard to do. I've helped everyone in my office do the same. Its just a matter of following directions. Heck, color grading a video is more dangerous than running magic lantern! :P

You're quite the downer, recordingwhiz!

I love ML. I can't afford to brick my cam, but I swear by it. However, there is that small, small, small chance...

I'm a 13 year old kid. If my camera is bricked, i'm screwed! Is the AGC...that bad? Is they're anyway I can clean it up in STPro?

Its really easy. As long as you do your reading and are careful to make sure when it says use version x if you have firmware 1.0.9 then use version x or if it says use y if your running 1.0.8. Just read carefully and don't get impatient

The hack won't buy you that much because the audio preamp is very noisy anyway. I had the 550D and now the 60D and it is just as bad. I have some good Sony lavs but in the camera there is a lot of hiss. For your $80 bucks you are $20 away from a Zoom H2 recorder. Only a hundred bucks and recommended by many in the audio section of this forum.

im a 4 year old idiot & while my daddys away from the computer having a piss I say go for it young warrior...it worked for me

Ok, a few more questions...

-If I brick the camera and send it in for repair, will it void my warranty?
-After I install ML, whats with all this battery stuff, I don't get it.
-Are there any special tricks?
-Are there any disadvantages, or problems/effects?
-How big is the file?
-I am getting the 550d that says only 550d on it, no t2i or anything. Is that compatible?

1. YES
2. IDK
3. YES
4. depends
5. ?
6. the 550D is the xact same camera as T2i. T2i as sold in the US and 550D for Europe.

Apologies for that last post - that was'nt me - my girlfriend is getting a little restless, & gave you that little gem of advice in response to me neglecting her for this seductive internet forum . I need to walk away from here now and give her some attention - but she did make a good point - if not knowingly - i would say be very careful & follow the instructions precisely, and the worry will go away, and you will be left with a camera with loads more potential - I was worried too but its really straightforward and really works. Nothing to fear

My advice would be not to try to install ML until you feel comfortable doing so. I don't yet feel comfortable and I work with computers all day. Perhaps I am a big wuss. :)

Beg and borrow equipment. BEG + BORROW! If you are in a big city there may be a film co-operative where you can rent inexpensive film equipment (though your age could be an issue, if it is, raise a fuss b/c they should help younger people make movies). Check with your school too. At the very least you'll be able to find someone to lend you a digital recorder and you can rent a boom mic for your project.

The only problem with method this is that you'll have to sync the sound. The best way to do this is to track someone down who has editing "station" with pluraleyes installed (again hopefully your town has a co-op). Then using the sound that was recorded by the crappy t2i mic you can (hopefully) sync the good sound files that were recorded with the boom mic and digital recorder. Or you can try to sync it yourself by keeping careful notes and using a clapper of some kind. This is how I do it (pluraleyes), I own a t2i and rent mics from my co-op and camera stores and I'm 20 years older than you are.

As a young man with little money, get people to lend you stuff! Start getting used to doing that now! Your gear will sit gathering dust 99% of the time. $80 in sound equipment is not going to get you good sound and you won't be happy with your film and you'll quit making them.

That's my 2c.
