AC130: system error e-03 and dual record fail

Camera froze up today- recording stopped, the on-screen clock froze, and I got "system error e-03". The red recording light started flashing. Camera stayed on though. I can't find anywhere where panasonic describes what this error means.

I was recording in dv mode- which I know runs at a higher bitrate. Is class 10 fast enough for this mode? I'm using Sony 32gb 40mbs class 10 cards.

My guess is a memory card issue- if so I can state that the dual record function does not continue to record if a memory card fails. Unless both cards failed at the same time (seems unlikely). Anyone else run into this error? Also- is there a good memory card testing software out there?

Hmm, I have a 160A, but have never recorded in DV mode. This records in SD, right, takes up 15% more space but gives you uncompressed sound?

I suppose you have clients who want SD? Can there be any other reason for recording in DV mode?

I have 500+ hours on my cam mostly PH mode, never any problem with any of the class 10 / 32Gb cards I have been using for 3 years.

I have long suspected, but never observed, that on dual record, if one card fails, the camera will stop.

I used DV for depositions- no widescreen allowed. Re: dual recording- the manual is a bit misleading. Recording WILL stop. This is from page 32:

During SIMUL REC, if recording has stopped because a recording error has occurred in one of the memory cards, the other memory card will continue to record.

... what I always thought was "if recording stops on one card because of a recording error, the recording will continue on the other card". This is not the case. SIMUL REC is still usefull I guess for having a backup copy, or if you see glitches/artifacts on the footage from one card, the same clip on the other card should be fine.

what they should say is "if both cards have stopped because of a recording error in one of the memory cards, the other memory card can continue to record".

@Ed.. thank you for pointing out what appears to be a VERY misleading representation.

I have always wondered what would happen if, as and when one of the cards were to fail under SIMUL RECORD.

The reality scenario seems to be for SIMUL RECORD
1. one card fails
2. recording stops . . . .
3. the operator presumably can now press Record i..e step 3 is not automatic

If this is the way it works, then try this when your cam is on tripod and you are 25 feet away busy doing other things. Even with a Studio1 Remote and long cord, you would have to see that the red light went out, and then hit Record, right?

Naughty !

It's like saying if you are on your way to the supermarket and your car stops, you can push it the balance of the distance to your destination (so long as it is downhill).

I noticed a problem with the auto-focus on the 160 where the practicality seemed to be "AF works fine if you go from close to far (or the reverse) AND you travel along an arc that includes some intermediate high contrast frames", otherwise it takes forever for the focus to settle down once you reach your destination.

Who is able to look at a scene and figure out which arc to pan through and who would want to take that arc to cater to the needs of the AF sensor? End result: Forget sports with AF.

I think I demonstrated this by in"bell/church" test video I recorded in July 2012. Notice how I can go from the bell to the church one way and it takes forever, whereas if I go another way it is fast.

Once I upgraded to 160A and got the Push feature, I basically stopped trying to use AF.

It would be great to get one or more comments on what is going on in the video i.e. were my conclusions valid or not valid?

All over, I continue to love the AG-AC160A but today I suppose I would get a 4K cam. With only 500 hours on the 160A I am a long way before I will be ready to consider an upgrade.

If you have seen the Brazil clip featuring the 120 Megapixel Canon sensor, no way anything you buy today is going to be "future proof".

This sounds similar to an error message I got on my AC-90. Check for the thread AC-90 "Error shut off camera" message. It's on the fist page here.
