Switching tape types

I decided to go with the Panasonic DVM63AMQ for my XH-A1, but also would like to use other, less expensive tapes at times. It's my understanding that it's ok to use different quality tapes as long as I stick to the same manufacturer?

If so, should I use a tape head cleaner between switching products (manufactured by the same company), or is that unnecessary?

Head cleaning tapes can be damaging to your camera's heads. You should not use them very often. And when you do use one, only run it for 10 seconds max.

As far as running different tapes of the same brand, I don't think that should be a problem. However, get a second opinion.

Also, why don't you just always use 63pq's. They are almost half as much as amq's and this would resolve the issues you asking about.

I shoot with the same tapes. It's been known that using HDV tapes reduce your chance of dropped frames so depending on what I'm shooting I'll use one or the other. I've never tested it myself, so I'm just trusting the research I've done on the topic.

I haven't used a head cleaner in my A1 yet, but I will probably use Canons head cleaner. It's probably the safe way to go.
