FS7: Swit 8U63 miniD-tap by Westside A V free STL file or buy ready made cable

The new Swit 8U63 batteries are great they plug right in to the FS7 no need for the jumper cable. And they have both USB and D-tap ports. However the T-tap placement makes it impossible yo use a Dtap while in the FS7, so I make mini D-tap plugs.

Now bear in mind that the max draw on these batteries is 50w so don't go crazy trying to pull to much power out of them. But it can be a very nice compact solution to use an Odyssey or monitor on your FS7.

Email me if you want the STL files for 3D printing and I will email them back to you. I think sharing STL files is fantastic I love Open Source in general. And 3D printers are fantastic way to share design ideas and get more ideas from others. Long live open source!

So the STL files are free, after printing you have to tap the hole for the 3mm screw and countersink the other end of the hole and generally file and finish the piece, this is standard with all 3D printed parts. I use the pins from a AB D-tap so you need one of them as well and you then solder them as in the photo, this is very tight, just take your time and do a clean job, no solder globs, just fill the solder cups to the top and insert cable when still liquid, this is the way to be neat. I also recommend filling the inside of the case with plastic resin as you do the final assembly and use 1" piece of heat shrink tube as strain relief, not shown in these photos as this is the prototype just screwed together, you also should enlarge the cable hole to the correct diameter for the cable and heat shrink tube you use.

I am also selling finished cables or just the printed parts on my WEBstore.

Thanks again for sharing the STL files, Olof. That's pretty awesome of you. I've been having a lot of fun with my 3D printer and this will be a nice little project. And I'm sure the SWIT batteries will be popular so I hope you sell a bunch of these!

I've got older swit batteries and the Dtap is on the side. Can't fit a plug in there. But it occurs to me that one could make a splitter cable that starts with a female Sony plug and splits onto a Female D tap and a male Sony to go into the camera. Maybe Alex Dolgin could make that up . Easy solution.

Anybody who knows how to solder and has the parts can do this, a great DUI project, or you can ask someone who does custom cables to do the job. Just remember old batteries don't deliver the same amperage.

Do you mean because they are old or is there a difference in the rated voltage or amperage?
I have S-8U62
14.4 V, 63Wh

As batteries age, both with lots of cycles and even just on the shelf, the internal resistance goes up and capacity drops so they hold and deliver less current. My 5 year old 8U62's now hold about 40Wh. So they run down faster than when new.

Is the USB power accessible when the 8U63 battery is in the FS7? Thanks!

On the new chipped FS7 Swits, yes, because it's on the bottom of the FS7 where the body curves up so it's easy access to the USB as there's nothing blocking it. They should have put the D-Tap there instead to make things easier.

I just got Olof's custom D-Tap for the new Swit chipped batteries and it works well. Fits right into the very tight space of the battery compartment. Now I can power the 7Q and the FS7 with one BPU Swit battery. Pretty nice as it keeps the camera light.

I find it really nice to have the 7Q on the FS7. I have it rigged so it's super minimal and the monitor only weights 1.2 lbs, so not much added weight. Plus, it's nice to have the VF with a LUT on it and keep the 7Q in S-Log mode so I get the proper waveform reading.
