FEATURE: Survival - The Feature, based on our Timefest Entry...

Okay, so I'm thinking we're not going to go with this investor. He wants us to add elements that change the entire feel of the movie from a psychological thriller to an exploitation flick. Not cool. And he wants to make 3x his investment back before we see a dime of the returns. And he wants creative control. And, um... no thanks.

Thanks guys!

It looks like the producers are giving this guy until Monday to decide if he wants to invest on our terms. If so, he's supposed to have the first portion deposited before the end of the year.

If not we will have a package written up for multiple investors. Of course that means another month's worth of set-backs at least. But hey, at least the weather will be warmer when we start shooting right?

All in His time.

So. We are looking for a $50,000 seed investment to secure our locations and name actors before we seek out the rest of our budget. This would allow us to have all of our major components (script, schedule, name actors, distribution) locked in and help our funding to happen much quicker, and also allow us to keep more control over the project.

This would most likely be a short term investment, recouping your investment and a 5-10% gain when the full budget is invested (then again you would be in a pretty powerful position to bargain for more). We need this soon so we can lock in our shooting dates. Feel free to PM me with any leads :)

110% is really low as payback for the development money. 120% seems to be the industry standard, plus lifetime points. Are you assuming 10% escrow for a Pay or Play deal for each of your "names", or what amount?

I'm sure you are correct, and I feel the same. 120% sounds more fair to me too, and I'm sure I can convince them to give an investor that. Producers seem to want to cut back everyone else's ROI while maximizing their own

As far as the 10% for Pay or Play, that sounds like what they were talking. Keep in mind, I'm not a producer on this (just writer/director) so I try to keep away from all things related to money as much as possible. I hate that part of filmmaking. I'm just doing this because I want to get as many points in my favor as possible so I can fight for artistic integrity and have more ammo than "I'm the writer/director, do what I say" it would be nice to add "we wouldn't be shooting right now if it weren't for so-and-so's seed money -which I helped get. Now do what I say".

Update: the seed investor will indeed get a 120% (up to $120,000) return with a back-end percentage -and my undying gratitude :) ROI estimated to be 1-3 months.

Any interested parties, please PM me and I will send you copies of all of our current assets (script, budget, schedule, etc.) and set up a meeting with the producers.

Thought I might as well post a few pics from the writing stages of Survival (these are all circa March 2010):

The book that inspired the magic.

This is where we wrote the initial story outline that defined all of the major plot points in the film.

Another big call tomorrow! This time with new investors :) I'm liking these guys a lot more, they have already shown that they believe the artistic qualities of the film are more important than the quick cash of a tax rebate. I like that a lot. As always, your prayers are appreciated.

They've got the investor's package and are reviewing the terms... Hopefully a decision over the weekend :)

PS: That means we could have the first bit of money by some time next week.

Several of our cast/crew members are taking vows... mine is a vow of hairiness: I will not cut my hair nor beard until the end of principal photography. Yes, there will be pictures.

I guess it's high time for an update. Keep in mind, by the time we finish shooting, it will have been about one full year of "director's beard" growth :) Enjoy:

Now, if only beard length were directly proportional to box office success...

I'll have to do a "braided beard" pic on set just for you Zaza!

Not yet. I got a text from one of our producers saying that we should have a conference call sometime this week. Their lawyers are still looking at the paperwork.

Waiting sucks.

Sounds like the age-old song and dance.

Waiting does suck. That's one of the quotes I've picked up over the years... "Now it's time to hurry up and wait!".

...to heck with that, I stopped waiting.
