Survey - What Camera / Deck Do You Use For Capture?

I see this topic up all the time, and I think it's time to formalize it for reference. If enough people respond without jumping topic, maybe the mods will sticky it for future generations. I'll put the information into a spreadsheet and host it once we have a good number of responses!

It is recommended that footage be captured into edit applications with a separate and dedicated MiniDV deck instead of putting unnecessary wear and tear on the heads of your DVX100 camera. Budget-minded users report good results using low-priced single-chip MiniDV cameras in place of a full-sized deck. So, what are you using, what system do you edit on and what challenges have you had if any?

Thanks for participating - again!

When I do not need to capture sound, I will use a Canon GL1 or GL2. The sound skips for some reason, but the video comes out ok. Then off to Vegas, AE, and Encore.

Timecode is usually fine, though I don't use it overly.

Benefit? Not using your Panny as a deck, and only to record. I have never hit rewind or fast forward on my DVX, and don't plan to.

'prolly a little over cautious, but four grand is four grand.

It's 6 years old, and the only problem is a loose FW port.

I often use a JVC deck of some sort (I don't actually own it). When I can't use that I use my Panasonic PV-GS70.

Just got my DVX100A and the 6 year old Sony TRV-900 gets used as a deck, and backup camera when needed.

3.2 Mhz pentium with two monitors, 800 GB disks, 1 GB ram, XP Pro with SP1 (no network), Premiere Pro 1.5

With "manual" capture no timecode problems...

Thanks for your replies so far.

For the purpose of gathering complete information, please try and format your answer just as mjmcneese2 did - perfect!

Thanks again for your time and effort on this little project!

When I don't want to pack the DVX on family trips/vacations, this little number can fit in my pocket. Actually takes pretty good video, for a consumer cam, and that's even after getting it wet with sea water 2x! Also has a pretty screaming 25x optical zoom.

Here's a link I just found to a CRAZY detailed review of the camera: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/JVC-GR-D270-Camcorder-Review.htm

I have a DSR-11 and a Sony GV-D900. I find that the DSR-11 has great versatility, it will record mini dv and DV cam (both small and large cassettes) and playback all of the mentioned plus PAL. I like the transport and speed for rewinding. As usual it depends on your needs. I receive footage from a lot of sources so I need the ability to be flexible.
As far as the GV-D900, I bought that used so that I could demo to the client. I really love that thing. It's small, has a 5inch monitor and is really well made.

The DV3000 is great for the same reasons a DSR-11 is great, especially the PAL/NTSC thing, I switch several times a day sometimes. Very rarely I use the DVX as a capture device when I need the footage in my computer quick but there's only 10 or so minutes on the tape. I'd never stick a tape in the deck and then back to the DVX ...

Uses the same battery/power supply as the DVX. Small. Decent image (used for behind-the-scenes footage).
