GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

@ Customergh4: I knew that already but wanted an easier internal option. The gh4 is a great camera, but I can now wait for the Gh5 and either get that, or the (then) reduced priced Gh4. I just don't have an urgent need to own this camera now.
I think the announcement could've been made at any time and didn't deserve all of the hype they built.

Anyway, what do the people here think about the Samsung NX1? The sensor is 28MP APS-C. It shoots 30fps UHD and Native 4K at 24fps. Body price is less than GH4 body.
I always thought of Samsung as a fridge and TV maker, but maybe this camera will change my opinion. What do you guys think?

EDIT: It also shoots 15FPS at full resolution , meaning 6480x4320 timelapse. :O
Another edit: And has H265 recording.

But did they build the hype or us? I've only seen info on this on rumor sites and this forum...

Specs look nice, but it's yet another lens mount to worry about. If it was m4/3 I would have considered it.

I believe this rumor's origins are 43rumors.com. That's the thing about rumors, they're a gamble. They were correct about one thing, we're all surprised! At least we can get on with our lives now ;-)

And who knows? The firmware update probably isn't finalized yet. Panasonic may very well throw in a few "extras" before the release, for which there is no specific date.

Yes, I've read all about the 10bit/444 but I'm really not interested in time-consuming, processor intensive workflows. I'd be more inclined to purchase an external recorder, which adds the bonus of a field monitor, something already on my list. I'd still rather have an HPX250/270 with interchangeable lens system and a large sensor, ie "AF200."

Wait. Let me understand this corectly.

This new 4K photo mode shoots 4K photos at 23.9fps at various aspect ratios?

If that is true, that is awesome! One of my biggest issues with the GH series is the motion of the video. It's very video-ish, it doesn't seem to have the same kind of motion characteristics of motion picture film. I'm wondering if this mode will improve that as it is essentially a series of 24 stills per second.

@fahnon, you have a good point, i guess it depends on whether 43rumors was quoting Panasonic or not. When a company says they have a surprise coming several days in advance of a trade show, people are going to speculate like crazy. Their PR people should know better, IMHO. If it indeed was Panasonic who said it was a surprise.

Yeah I agree if they threw his sensor into an af100 body and added beefier codec options (4k/60fps/200mb, 10bit/422) and charged $4000 we'd all have one...

I'm happy they are doing SOMETHING, rather than just moving on. Wonder if H.265 can be put in it?

I just went and looked at the article that started all his and the info came from "a trusted source" submitting to a rumor site. We just ran wih the possibilities.

Well when all is said and done, I'm only disappointed because I was expecting a massive update. If I wasn't expecting anything, I would think this update is a decent one. I'll be shooting in 4k over UHD from now on for sure.

24fps is film rate and imo GH4 definately has a film look to its 24fps videos.

It's PHOTOkina so all that makes sense: they wanted photographers to get more excited by this camera. I think we can still expect everything that we were hoping for, but just some time after Photokina.

Sorry I disagree. While it looks good, it doesn't render motion like an Alexa or like 8mm, 16mm or 35mm film. It lacks that suspension of disblief that I'm still convinced has to do with the way that subject motion is rendered in the frame. Now I admit I coud totally be wrong about motion being the key factor, but I have yet to see DSLR/mirrorless video that captures that same characteristic no matter how the image is reframed for 2.4:1 or color graded or slid slowly on a dolly/slider.

Also true. The rumor didn't say that photokina was when the surprise was coming. That was just another assumption on our part.

Edge details and sharpness. This is a huge killer to 24p cadence. Film has no such thing as sharpness or edge enhancement. In order for motion blur between frames to be believable you have to minimize the edge detail. Lower sharpness as much as possible. Yes you get a softer overall image but it is more natural. That is also the advantage of shooting 4k. Other RAW cameras tend to shoot, well RAW which has no sharpness or edge enhancement added and thats why their motion can look a bit smoother. Forget about sharpened detail, shoot 4k and enhance in post or keep it natural looking.

I've been thinking about this lately. The DVX100 had a certain "mojo" to it. I remember the first time I saw video shot with a DVX100 and being blown away. I can't say that any of their recent cameras capture that feeling. Or maybe I'm just used to the look? But I also think other cameras do have mojo, particularly the C100/300. Could very well be the motion characteristics.
