GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

This is demonstrably untrue considering you can get raw out of a 5Dmk2 and a Blackmagic pocket camera. How is it not feasible that a GH4 isn't capable of it?

While not technically impossible Panny would never do internal raw as it's too cumbersome, the recording medium is SD cards and they don't go too well with RAW video files because of large file sizes and potential speed issues. Remember the 5d raw capabilities were from hacks. GH4 hacked internal raw? yea probably but from Panny? No. There are also a number of things like RAW standards.

To the people that think internal raw is possible you clearly have no understanding of how these Japanese camera companies work specifically Panasonic.

Too cumbersome to do RAW? There may be other reasons not do do RAW (market position, financial incentive, etc.) but realtime H.264 encoding is much more difficult that RAW for sure! You do know that the BMPCC uses SD cards to record RAW right? More importantly, Panasonic engineered the GH4 to use UHS Class 3, while the BMPCC only recommends UHS Class 1 cards, so speed certainly won't be an issue for the GH4. The only standard for RAW is the one the manufacturer makes up for their particular device.

Isn't the bmpcc 1080p raw? Big difference I would assume.

and I thought the announcement was suppose to be out by now?

From 43rumors.com: "Announcement tomorrow (Monday Sept 15) at 9:00 Photokina-Köln time! Panasonic announcement will be at 14:00!"

Germany is 7 hours ahead (I'm in Central time), so 1400 in Germany is 0700 here. Tomorrow morning it is!

...Assuming this rumor is correct ;-)

Like I said this is Panasonic and not Black Magic the way they think influences their product design and ethos and they are totally different in various aspects. I did say while technically not impossible, so that basically alludes to the points you made regarding market position etc. and yes 1080p raw is on the BMPCC but 4K raw internal on the gh4 might not have enough headroom for Panny to feel comfortable putting on their camera.

4K Raw would be incredible and I know that it probably won't happen but I'd be very happy with 1080p Raw on my GH4 that's not a third party hack.

Utter rubbish.

That's a bit of a brave statement don't ya think? :)

What a crazy times. Month by month everything is almost turning upside down. Last month's camera becomes "obsolete": I'm just looking at Samsung NX1 (this codec is truly groundbreaking). Let's wait for Panasonic: one more hour.

H265 codec maybe?
I think I would quite happily sacrifice all the rest for this.

Someone who knows how a company like Panasonic works should probably set up a company on his own and become mega-succesful.... :-)

Now, we all breathe out and wait what will come.

Panasonic announces the new firmware update program for the LUMIX G Interchangeable Lens Camera

DMC-GH4. The firmware will be released to enhance the performance and controllability of the camera, featuring new 4K Photo Mode.

The 4K Photo mode encourages a new way of photography first proposed by Panasonic. It encourages users to capture spur-of-the-moment, high resolution, 4K photos by cropping out a designated frame from a 4K video. With the new firmware for GH4, it is easier to get 4K photo by using the dedicated mode.

Once selecting the 4K Photo Mode, recording format, picture quality setting, brightness level are automatically set to the optimum parameter for photo shooting. Users can record high quality video either in 4:3, 3:2 or even 1:1 aspect, in addition to 16:9, all which can provide a still image with 8-megapixel equivalent resolution. Each JPEG image cropped out of the video footage complies with EXIF just as a normal still picture. While recording the 4K video in 4K Photo Mode, it is possible to mark the designated part by just pressing the [Fn1] button. This can reduce postproduction work for searching the spur-of-the-moment worth cropping out. Furthermore, 4K video can be recorded continuously with Loop Rec function which keeps on saving 5 newest 2-minute video files before you press record. This means users can patiently wait for the perfect photo opportunity to come along for as long as they want through keeping the camera recording.

There are more functional upgrades such as an addition of 4K video recording in 23.98p (MP4, AAC) and enhancement of controllability over ISO setting or light amount of flash emission. Also, the DMC-GH4 now expands its connectivity with external equipment. For example, the PC software “USB Tether*2” enables remote camera control (shooting, setting or image data transfer) by PC via USB.

The PHOTOfunSTUDIO 9.5PE and Panasonic Image App for iOS/Android will also be updated to support these functional upgrades.

The new firmware program is scheduled to be released with more information in detail at the Panasonic LUMIX Support Site at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/ in the beginning of October, 2014.

*1 Use SDXC/SDHC Memory Card compatible with UHS Speed Class 3 (U3)

Wow. What the flunk... what was the validity of the source for those rumors?!

:(

EDIT: I know I shouldn't whine too much... the GH4 is an amazing camera! I lost nothing. In fact, I'm still shooting my next project with it this weekend. But man, I sure did let those rumors get to me (and I'm sure so did many others) I really thought something was coming. Bummer...
