GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

Enough with the speculations, its really pointless.
Its already 08 of September.
Perhaps the surprise was the new metabones or the camcorder and nothing to do with GH4?

There's a new GH4 firmware coming very soon, but nobody knows the exact release date.

It's expected to be announced before the start of PhotoKina which is Sept 16th.

Might as well speculate. It's fun! =) I would actually love to see AVC-Ultra implemented. Might be too much of a jump for them to make, but I love the AVCHD footage for the most part as a lower bitrate option when 4K isn't needed. It just holds up very well, and so I'd love to see a more efficient 4K codec as well.

AVC-Ultra isn't a new codec though, it is a less efficient version of H264 in order to provide for more efficient editing (All Intra), and at higher bit-rates to compensate for the less efficient compression. Basically the 100Mbit/sec all intra in 1080P on the GH4 is AVC-Utra, just they haven't branded it as that for their own reasons.

...But most of the AVC-Ultra CODECs are 10-bit 4:2:2 formats, so I think the HPX-250 was the first prosumer camera to support this.

10-bit 4:2:2 in-camera would be so killer. 60p in 4K would be nice, but not nearly as game-changing.

The waiting drives me batty.

That helped - a lot, thanks. Also left Shadows/Highlights at 0 and set Contrast to -2. Getting better at secondary corrections now too. I'm still hoping for a firmware update that presents us with a log profile.
Glad it helped.

I dont think I would use it since the codec isn't as strong as I would like for heavy post work. I like getting a little more "baked in" with DR in shadows and not overly saturated. This gets me 80% there and the rest is cake in post. Even post work adds noise and degrades the image so I think less is more on both ends of the process when we deal with 4:2:0 codecs.

Is there any date set for this surprise to be released? I feel seriously excited :)
For me great surprise is the fact that they won't introduce "cheaper" model, they're just lowering prices for gh3. It means that it will hold it's value longer, more customers coming to gh4 will also mean that they can focus only on this model when it comes to firmware (talking video aimed products). They seems to be very current owners friendly.

Panasonic is introducing a new m4/3 fixed-lens "pocket" camera ( LX100 ) with a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 equiv zoom and a new prime lens on September 15th, so maybe the new firmware will be covered too.

IBC opens on Friday (12th). I suspect there'll be a joint announcement from Atomos & Panasonic regarding the Shogun & the GH4. A firmware announcement would likely be made then. Wonder if there'll be any goodies in the FW beyond the features needed for the Shogun? (I.E. on the Colour Science). With the recorder, there could be the possibility of recording Cinema DNG Raw over HDMI. I'm flying out there tomorrow night. Can't wait!

I'm also hoping it is internal 10 bit 4:2:2 recording. Even if it is just in 1080p mode considering how everyone says you can turn 8 bit 4:2:0 4k footage into 10 bit 4:4:4 1080p. I'm hoping they figured out a way to make it an in camera option rather than something you have to do in post.
