Support System on Carry-on?

Is there any risk the TSA wouldn't like to see my 15mm rod support system as I fly to vegas?

A few years ago they made my put my Arri 650 doors in luggage, so anything may get bounced from carry-on these days, no matter what is is. Be prepared. They did let me carry on 2 liter bottles of Scotch though, figure that rule out. Unpredictable at best.

Not even the most evil terrorist would use a fine scotch as a fire accelerator, that's common knowledge. S.P.E.C.T.R.E. would not approve of such waste, you'd get banished and outcast in a instant.

OK, back to the original question. I suspect the actual rods might cause you trouble as those could be assembled into a baton of sorts*. I'd only carry-on the camera and lenses - things that the luggage system can damage not matter how good casings one got.

* and of course somebody with a very vivid imagination could fathom that those can be used as a gun barrel and that ballpoint pen in your shirt pocket is the trigger.

I have them (rods) in my carry on roller and my bag gets flagged about half the time. They dump the contents, wipe everything down with the sniffer and let me repack it. Not a huge deal and TSA hasn't ever hinted at preventing me from carrying on the rails...especially when they realize it's a camera and stuff.

i've always had my zacuto stuff in my check in luggage. but have had them somehow let a leatherman go through. keep my carry on bag full of the camera stuff and snacks.

thanks guy, I'm just worried, since I'm taking everything I'm bringing onto the plane (I don't really dig the $25 check-in fee) and I'm packing lightly so I won't be a burden like some are.

interested in your feedback after the flight... We will be traveling with rails in about a month too...

I am worried about other items too like a small light stand, halo rig, monopod... hrmm

will do, I'll be posting videos @NAB, and if you notice the lack of focus, you'll know they took my rods
:D

haha - if they do take them... and you dont have a bag to check... do they get thrown in the trash with all the fluid bottles over 3oz??? That makes for an expensive trip!

thing is, my brother made the whole system at his work

So I'd only be out maybe $50

A couple of things I've learned the hard way. You're not alone in trying to avoid the $25 checked baggage fee...seems like everybody is trying to carry on everything now. Get an early group (1 or 2) boarding pass. You do that by actually talking to a person at the ticket counter...even if you have a boarding pass, if it's group 5 or 6, you'd best talk to someone and turn on the charm.

Also, get a "European shoulder bag" for stuff in addition to your carry on bag. You can often get away with a big (but not illegal) carry on/roller, a back pack and a purse (errrrr...European shoulder bag).

They're not going to take your rails from you. They may check the contents of your bag but they won't confiscate your rails. On smaller jets, they often try to make you check your carry on at the gate. I've always been able to charm my way out of that one by explaining the contents to them..."my precious camera, computer, hard drive". They're usually pretty reasonable.

You my friend, are invaluable!

Thanks,
Zac

Thanks! Ever since I told my company that I'm not anxious to travel, I've been traveling a lot. LOL

OMT: I pack a bunch of my stuff in one big checked bag/roller (tripod, lights, audio stuff, clothes that comply with my corporate dress code). If your checked bag weighs over 50 pounds, they make you buy an overweight baggage ticket ($100 one way). I always weigh mine on the bathroom scales before I leave...if it's over 49 pounds, I look at what I can add to my purse....errrrr....European shoulder bag.

Yeah, what I'll probably do, it put the rods, and attachments into my big carry on (Still legal) then camera and accessories into my laptop bag with my laptop, and put whatever doesn't fit where, in my backpack

I've been living out of the US for some time, so what is the $25 check in fee? International flights you can check 70 kilos normal and carry on one more. I usually ask for a 6 pack of beer at the beginning of the flight to save them running back and forth too much.

The $25 check in fee is for checking each bag not carried on.
Carry on's are not charged, but you are more limited now as to how many carry on's you can take.

That's pretty beat. I was complaining when they wouldn't give me coffee and orange juice at the same time. I guess they don't give you anything anymore.

Yea, TSA and the economy have pretty much sucked the last ounce of fun out of travel. Don't blame it on the flight crew though...they're as sick about it as you are.
