Auto vs. Manual focus at live events

I was wondering what is generally accepted as the normal method for shooting live events such as party/nightlife or concert type events, auto or manually focusing? also aperture and shutter speeds?

I used manual focus when I shot a wedding and it worked out fine. When I shoot sports I usually use auto cause its constant moving and zooming and it seems to work better

I'd go manual. For that type of shooting, you're going to have chaotic lighting and movement. You don't want the camera deciding what to do in that situation.

The one time I have tried to use autofocus in an event like situation, people kept walking in front of me and the autofocus would go nuts. Definitely go for manual.

I think it depends on where he is for the event.

Are you going to be close to your subject(s)? If so, I think auto would be fine, but like jdajda said, if you have lots of things going on to effect your focus, go with manual.
