Supermates - Alex DePew

This one had some kinda funny parts. I couldn't take it too seriously, but the drawings really kicked ass. I actors seemed to speak their lines too much. I know it was sort of a joke on the genre, but overall I didn't care for it too much. Some things that would have helped are some sound fx during the fight, some better dialogue and maybe a more interesting location. my .02.

I agree about the sfx on the punches. That will definitely be added. The acting from my part was not so good. I have acted only once before and also under duress. I was forced to play Dr. Devious when my actor fell ill. And yeah the drawing did kick some serious arse. I especially like the second panel with Capitano Justice falling towards Dr. Devious.

And it wasn't so much a joke on the genre (a small part of it was), but more of a regular roomate story with superheroes.

And I completely agree about the location. I made my life easier for my first film by setting it in one location. And my one location for the first weekend (none of the footage was usable when I had to sub in for the actor on the second weekend) was an awsome apt in Manhattan with a great view. But my next film will definitely be in a more interesting locale than an apt.

I do disagree about the dialogue. The script was funny as hell. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I thought it was hilarious and blame my delivery on many of the lines falling flat.

Thanks for the comments,
Alex

I'm all about swearing in screenplays, but it really didn't seem to fit this piece. It almost seemed childish, but at the same time it worked for the characters, so I'm torn.

Overall it was a great concept, I love the fact that he's just such a nuckle head that he has no idea of what's going on.

Jack already went into more detail on the technical aspects than I would like to touch.

The intro was great, and tying it in at the end worked really well.

The acting was hammy at best.

Good entry, even if I felt it came up a bit short overall.

Yea, I know what it's like to have to step in front of the camera last minute. Good job on still completing it. That's more than I can say for myself :).

Hey Alex, sorry I've not been able to comment until now. I'm also not able to take the time to read the other posts, so mine may just be redundant, but I at least want to post my thoughts.

LOVED the opening shots with the comic book frames. Great drawings. This is something I was confident would be in many of the films, but yours looked really good.

I don't know if it was the lighting or the color correction, but something left me wanting more out of the image.

The mic's either too close or the gain up too high ... it's picking up all the nose sounds as the evil guy breaths in between lines ... also has that too close to the mic boom sound.

Lead guy is HUGE, and has a great accent when talking on the phone. I love that he's an idiot & has no idea about his room mate, and that the room mate simply takes advantage of this.

At 04:13 when the bad guy jumps into frame, it looked quite cool, but we're seriuosly missing SFX in all the hits/swings during the fight.

Overall, good concept & I liked the script, though I'm not a huge fan of some of the humor (i.e. my kids keep wanting to watch what I'm watching so I have to be cautious), a lot of the things still worked in here & could have worked even better if the delivery was improved a little more (i.e. acting, etc.).

Cursing did not bother me. Liked the intro (wish I had done that). Needed some sound effects but you know that. What did bother me was the "toy" and the dialouge regarding it. Personally I thought it brought your movie down from what it should have been. The dumb superhero roommate idea was good though.

Hey Alex,

I thought your fight choreography was really nice. It's a really solid foundation for some foley work, if you ever get a chance to add any. I thought the purple dildo was funny, but would have been funnier if the images in the beginning hadn't given away that the superhero used a glowy dildoy thing. For example, if the art had showed the hero with a purple lightsaber thing, and then we see a dildo it might have caught audience members more off guard.

The pointless spanish accent always cracks me up. Too bad about your first shoot. Wouldn't mind seeing some shots from the nicer apartment. Overall, nicely done. Can't wait to see what you do next.

What I would do now is export the finished edit from a 30p timeline, seperate the audio, and convert the video to 24p (which will slow it down 20% to 80%) then drop the video onto a 24p time line and speed it up 25% and it will sync with the audio and play smoothly.

I hate to disagree with you Jack, but I think your math may cancel itself out. If you convert 30p to 24p with 80% speed it will look smooth although slower, I agree. But once you use your NLE in a 24p timeline to speed up those frames it may be the exact same effect as dropping the 30p movie into a 24p timeline in the first place. The only advantage may be to have field/frame blending on the speed up, instead of frames being dropped to conform the frame rate.

30 x .8 X 1.25=30 That being said, I didn't find the find the frame rate in this film too distracting.

Thanks. Next time I won't be dragged by the director (me) in front of the camera!:nads: That would have made the delivery and hamminess issue dissapear. That being said I thought Capitano Justice (Nick Marcotti) did a great job of playing his role. But the script hinged on a strong performance from the villain.

Thanks for the comments,
Alex

Thanks. The artwork was done by the writer and they came out great.

Please expand on this, I would really like to know what you thought was lacking. I didn't do any color correction, barring slight work on the tv flicker scene. I thought the colors popped and the lighting was appropriate for the scenes. But please let me know. I am trying to learn and any help is greatly appreciated.

The sound didn't come out too clean. The mic was actually too far away in many scenes. We had a small crew and the mic was held by a C stand. Next time I get a sound guy! I have a lot to learn about recording sound and this will be a priority before my next film.

Thanks. Nick's (Capitano Justice) acting was very good and I was quite happy with the way he performed.

Yup. I am going to add in some sfx for the landing and the punches. I hope to also be able to work with the audio.

The script is very strong and the humor is obviously not for children.

Thanks for the comments and get back to me on the image issue. I'm very interested.

Do I see signage with the Coke can or did you just kind of put it in there? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Yup. Got $20K for that product placement! And I spent it all on getting Dr. Devious. But Christopher Walken just took the money and ran so I had to sub in.

I will definitely put in the sfx. What about the dialogue regarding the "toy" didn't work for you? I thought it worked well so I am interested.
Thanks,

I see what you are saying about the dildo. When I screened it for several people they were unsure about the ending. So I tried to make the end tie into the begining better and make the dildo's appearance less confusing.

Thanks for the comments on the choreography. I agree about the sfx. I think it will make the scene work much better.

Hey man, I'm sure there is nothing I can add that's not being addressed on a technical level. I just wanted to say you should feel very proud to actually get a movie in the can, and to achieve the most basic thing of all, which is to make a series of images tell a story. That in itself is quite hard to accomplish.

I'm down for the next one. You doing Horror-Fest? I am and thinking about trying to coordinate some folks schedules to all work on each-others' so we all have good crews.

I'm definitley down for Horrorfest. Sounds like a good plan to get everyone helping each other out.

And it feels great to have the first one in the can. But I still have that itch that I could have done 543 things different to make it better. I have a feeling that doesn't go away though.

Ha ha, no matter how many you do, there will ALWAYS be 543 things to do differently, trust me.
