I have a lot of fun with my GH2 and a set of Pentax-k and Canon FD lenses. Only problem I have is, that a lens has an focus extension of 20mm but the normal gearrings are only 8mm wide. Does somneone know a dealer, who sells gearrings 20mm broad?
Either ger can be 20mm, and the other one about 6mm, or else both gears can be more like 12mm, and the overlap will give you 20mm of movement easily. A 20mm follow focus gear is not unheard of. A 20mm lens gear is very unlikely.
Do you NEED to do focus pulls with that particular lens? If so, masking tape may be the answer.
It's good to ask yourself, because I decided to rig all of my lenses up with gears, but in all honesty, wide lenses don't really need gears, as it's rare to ever do a proper focus pull with a wide lens, and besides that, I'm not overly convinced I need a follow focus at all, except for those odd shots where you have short depth of field and want to literally pull focus, a look that is waring quite thin with me these days.
Mostly I make estimates of my distance to subject in metres, and dial the lens to that. I find I get better focus that way than using the viewfinder exclusively, unless I'm wide open or on a long lens of course.
