Super8mm

I just asked for (and got) a quote from Pro8mm for the 4008 camera...

and they go by 4 day weeks!!!! Hahahaha. They want me to rent a 4008 camera for 1,200/week when the camera is only (about) 3,400 in price.

Forget that.

I got a quote for the non- Max8, super 8 7008 camera for $250/day, three day week at north american camera, llc. That's 750/week versuis 1,200 a week.... I'd rather give up 20% horizontal resolution.

I don't want to, but price versus product makes me think otherwise. $1,200/week is really silly for Super8... a format that is almost completely dead. I'd think about it, but I don't want to get my processing and scanning from them, because of word of mouth.... so I'm going to probably avoid them. Higher prices and word of mouth bad experience? No thanks.

Right now North American Camera, LLC with the 7008 super8 camera is going to win out with processing and telecine at Spectra.

What a joke.

Now I'm seriously reconsidering my RedOne and Cooke Primes. It doesn't have the same 'character' as super8mm, but it's less expensive and I can do more takes.

Kinda sad that this is forcing my hand. I can't bring a budget to production that is MORE expensive than RedOne and Cooke primes... and only super8mm. It will never fly. Really sad.

I'll still do the tests because I love celluloid, but gosh darn, they need to adjust price to attract people like me. I was willing to invoice 1,000 for film stock and processing and another 1,000 for scanning... but I can't justify a rental of 1,200 a week for camera. That makes 0 sense.

1,200 for the camera, 1,000 for the stock, 1,000 for the scanning is about 3,200 for the whole thing... hardly a savings from RedOne and Cooke lenses for one week.

8mm is truly dead if they keep the pricing as such.

A few months about I had a moment of nostalgia, and did look up e-bay prices for a Bolex, which was 'the camera' in my youth for 'artsy fartsy' film making...

Well... anyway... I then thought do I really want to mess around with film/processing/scanning (I definitely have no nostalgia about a Moviola... or actual razorblades or tape on film...)

Heck, I don't even want to think about printing my old still negatives... where's my scanner...
