Super16 VS DVX

I liked the film and the style 100%. I really enjoyed the short. But since this is about 16mm vs dv video.....

The video portion was well shot but it didnt look like film as much as it could. Video has always had a higher saturartion. Compare the womans red dress from 16mm and the dv video. Her dress becomes much more saturated with color in the video. I doubt the average or even majority of viewers would notice or care. But as a filmmaker, you might want to consider leveling the color saturation levels to match.

Prodigy,

It's actually really funny that you mention that because the saturation levels on the video are purposefully brought up to 100%. The director wanted to create a surreal look. I'm actually surprised that the video held up as well as it did considering that it was shot 4X3 and brought into a HD1080i60 timeline and stretched/up-rezed to fit the screen then squashed again for DVD/Internet release.

oh! Well if that was the look the director was going for, then 100% ok.
I thought that might be the case, I just assumed otherwise due to the title of the thread having the two vs each other. I thought it was about the intercut of dv into film.

I am very surprised on the quality achieved of the SD dv footage, but then again you took the resolution from the 16mm ballpark and entered it into dv's domain. I think the best dv shot was the woman entering the water.

I just want to say again, that I did enjoy the film. Good job!

Thanks again for the input. I wish you could see the DV footage in the HD version of the film. It looks TERRIBLE. Even with the saturation down it looks TERRIBLE. Of course, it's being blown up to about 4X its size and then stretched horizontally to fit the 16X9 screen. For small internet movies it work perfectly well but, I am afraid when we release it at festivals in its native size.

Guy who shot it is a film student at SDSU named Erik Knox. I have his contact information if you want it. It's in Portuguese because they are supposed to be in Brazil.

Damn there are a lot of people on this site. I went over my 10GB per month .Mac quota in two days! I switched the URL at the top to another, more generous server if anybody still wants to watch it...

LOL, two hints they are not in Brazil. I can´t understand what they are saying because of their accent, and the guy is wearing a shirt and throusersat the beach!

But it´s a cool short nonetheless. Good work!

HAHA, yeah. We only had the cam for two days so we shot for two 18hr stretches on a weekend. Let's just say that some details may have been overlooked... The two actors were Spanish and learned their lines the week before. Fortunately the majority of people at film festivals don't know any better. Ignorance is bliss I guess?

Haha, I hope not... There was actually supposed to be a scene where you see the two getting out of the boat and into the car but apparently we ran out of time and sunlight so we couldn't shoot it. I wish I could post the 1080i version of this piece, those Super 16 stocks really do look incredible. Anybody want to lend me some bandwidth? :)

This looks great. Super 16 rocks. I thought the DVX footage held its own admirably and achieved the surreal effect the director wanted. I sent you an email by the way! Cheers,
Carlo

Cinematically the movie is a bit boring and doesn't really bring up the nuances of S16mm. For that matter it looks like average stuff from CineAlta or Varicam. Still that lack of visual smoothness ads to the simple story. So yeah i really enjoyed your film!

How can a movie file that big bring up the nuances of any format, let alone Super16? Like I said earlier, if anybody has the bandwidth to support the native HD transfer of our film let me know and I'll be happy to post it as such.

you have a quicktime in 1080p? how many megs is it? I get 400 gig's transfer a month.

In it's native state it's about 6.38GB. Even with the small 65MB file I'm using now they shut down my .Mac site. Wanna take a risk?
