Just caught this one On Demand. One of those same day as theatres deals.

Completely enjoyable. Probably a hair better than Kick-Ass IMO (some people might say it was much better). Ellen Page, of course, stole the show.

And I have to say...SPOILER

I wanted to see this last weekend, but opted to see Hanna instead. Thanks for the heads up on the On Demand; I'm going to check to see if this is on Apple TV.

I thought this was brilliant. One of my my favourite films of the year. Where kick-ass (which I loved) was still a glossy take at subverting the super-hero genre, I felt this to be a more realisitc and darker attempt at the same thing. Most of it is handheld, and directed with far more reservation and dead pan humour. In places it plays like a mumblecore movie with dark humroured violence.

I don't understand the negative critic reviews.... Well, I do, but I don't agree. I think many critics found the violence to be too realistic and so perceived wild tonal shifts in the film. I thought it was tonally consistent, and honest. Kick-ass got panned for having an 11 year old girl commit uber violent acts, but it was still done in a very flamboyant comic book unrealistic style. This film is far more theatrical in it's action scenes so it'll either make you laugh or whince more depending on your sense of humour . I found it funny all the way through and didn't think it veered off course at all :/.

It asks questions about the characters who feel the need to carrying out this violence in the name of good, and also questions of yourself for laughing at it/them. There are also some interesting plot choices that you would not get in a typical hollywood film tackling this subject, but it does it while still keeping a foot in reality and the structure of the story intact, leaving you with genuine emotion for the characters.

I get fed up with movies that go exactly where you think they will, and often feel that the execs are ticking off the demographics. This felt like something much more daring and personal. Ellen Page delivers a fantastic performance too.

All IMO but I like James Gunn's 'slither' and I felt this was a more mature piece and a step forward.

Enjoyable Indie film. The narrative was fun, but I was expecting a much more "controversial" development. I think Kevin Bacon's character deserved much more air time. I found the ending to also be, personally, a bit of a let down. While it was a valid and somehow interesting way to end it, it just didn't felt right with the overall tone of the film. Loved the "realistic" violence and, on the other hand, the over the top gore. it was hilarious. Also loved the "Batmanesque" tone of voice of the Crimson Bolt, which must have been an intentional gag. All in all, an interesting and enjoyable little film. Nothing spectacular or outstanding, but it knew what it was: An unpretentious, fun, relatively low budget Indie film that wanted to entertain while still having "something to say". Not a fan of Ellen Page, but she really did deliver here. Overall great performances from the cast.
