super-8 look

Is it possible through the scene settings to achieve a look similar to super-8? If so, any direction would be appreciated.

If it has to be done in post, what software (or plugins for FCP) would you recommend?

Thanks.

Crush blacks, bring up whites and mids a lot in post. De-saturate. All this can be done with the 3-way color corrector that FPC offers!

i actually just bought a super 8 cam. I'll be sure to post some footage once I get it. I really want to see how it will mix with my DVX footage.

The imager size of 8mm film and the DVX are very similar, so the depth of field will be much the same. The DVX footage will have much more detail and clarity compared to even well exposed, developed, and telecined 8mm, so the biggest thing you'd have to do is intentionally munge up the image to make it look bad. Maybe shoot THICK mode, lower DETAIL settings all way, leave CORING at 0, and maybe intentionally shoot with 6dB or more of gain to induce noise/grain, CINELIKE_V would probably be a good GAMMA mode for this.

Any other destructive effects would have to be done in post: film judder, microlines, streaks, etc.

Why try to make the DVX look like 8mm?

Thanks for the advice everyone.

To answer your question Joshua - I was watching the show Globe Trekker on the Travel Channel. Between changes in the story they used what seemed like super-8 shots for the transitions (of the beach, or the presenter turning to hike up a mountain).

It was just a look that clicked with me. I want to try and duplicate it. I think it would fit in well with a documentary I'm planning.

What kind of super 8? If you want the old 70's family footage look that's one thing, but you can now shoot stocks like Vision 3 super 8 and it looks pretty amazing. Crushing your blacks and desaturating won't get you that look.

William - I'm going for the old 70's family footage look. It would be very similar to the look that John achieved in his test footage.

I found the Globe Trekker website (www.GlobeTrekkerChannel.tv). There's a default video that loads on the main page which has the effect in it, mixed with regular footage.

EDIT: I think the default video on the site might be random. The clip that has the effect in it is from Music: Deep South USA.
