Suggestions for DVX100B Tape

I recently purchased my DVX100B camera and it came with a stock Panasonic tape (AY-DVM63AMQ). I've heard that you should stick with 1 type(brand) of tape because of chemical issues. Is this true? If so, which brand/type of tape do you suggest I should use. Thanks.

Brand loyalty is just a way to simplify any concerns. It's more an issue of wet-type vs. dry-type tape. Most are dry. Sony is wet-type.

Honestly, just pick one and stick with it. Lots of folks around here keep with the Panasonic tapes and are very happy. I happen to prefer Fuji.

Thanks. And is there a difference in model types of tapes within Panasonic, besides just quality. For instance, are there wet and dry Panasonic tapes?

I, too, like Fuji tapes. However, I have also used Panasonic and, occasionally, Maxell. These are all dry lube tapes and play well together. Sony, as has been said, is a wet lube tape and is the bully in the schoolyard.

No. Each make sticks with one technology. All Sony miniDV is wet-lube. All Panasonic are dry, as are Fuji, Maxxell, and TDK.

is there a difference between a "master tape" and just a normal one? i ask cuz when the dvx's come with a master, but iz that different in any way? why do they call it a master.

They are called "Master Quality (MQ)" or "Advanced Master Quality (AMQ)" because they are less prone to dropouts. While I only use Panasonic AMQ tapes, there really isn't much of a difference between the other tapes. In terms of image quality, there is no difference at all because it is a digital signal being written to the tape. As long as the tape can record that signal then it is a full quality image. But, like I said, some of the cheaper tapes are a little less durable and more prone to dropouts.

In my opinion, just pick any brand, except Sony, and stick with it. Did I mention don't pick Sony? If you want to be 100% absolutely sure of the least chance of dropouts then go with the Panasonic AMQ. I have only ever had a handful of times where the cheaper tapes had dropouts anyway so there is not much difference (except Sony).
