FS5: suggestion for Amadou

Hi Amadou. I hope you're still there... of course you are!

Can I suggest a camera that is MUCH better than the FS5? I refer to the Canon range. There are several that you might consider. What I suggest is you ask a question (or two...) on a Canon forum. I'm sure they'd love to have you, although we'd miss you terribly over here. And then there are a load of forums where you can check on the Ursa range. I'm sure you'll want to explore their possibilities in depth. Have fun.

And just to pre-empt any questions you might have... The models I suggest you consider are the 100, 200 and 300 and then there are mk1 and mk2 versions. They all have different sensors and unique attributes which you should check carefully before committing to actually buying one. Just make sure you know everything about each one otherwise you could rush into something, although I'm sure you're much too careful to rush anywhere. I'm afraid I don't know anything about any of them so it would be a complete waste of your time to ask me anything. Take care.

You can add people to your 'ignore' list.
As understandable as your reaction is, there are still lots of people who are kind enough to answer these questions, good questions and silly questions. But please don't let this forum be a place where people have to be afraid to ask questions.

I'd say: ignore, enjoy or take part.

cheers

You're right, of course Publimix. I just got so p***** off with so many posts and so many questions that seemed lazy, or even worse, provocative. But I agree, the OP just might be genuine and if that's the case then my reaction was unwarranted. And if the OP is a troll, then maybe the best approach is to ignore him/her and wait for the moderator to step in. And I also agree that we should be able to post even the most basic of questions and that we should help each other where we can. So apologies to Amadou and yourself and anyone else I might have offended. If anyone (eg the moderator) feels I should remove the original post, that's fine. Cheers.

hahaha, oh my, lol, I laughed so hard reading this!

You are a very evil man! ;-)

But you're being evil for the good of the community! mwhaha

Your evil genius knows no limits!

Actually the Canon cameras are not an option because the C100 does not handle 4k. The C200 has RAW but no decent intermediate codec and file sizes are huge. The C300 mk2 is too expensive. Finally the Black Magic may have been a good option had all discussions not be derailed by Stehem who seems to have nothing better to do than to bug into threads that don't concern him.

Amadou, I understand wanting to thoroughly research your options before purchase as it's a big financial commitment and you don't want to deal with regrets. However, it feels like you want someone else to make the decision for you, so here you go: get the FS5m2 with Inferno kit.

I just ordered this camera as I didn't have the budget for the EVA1 or C200, I want something that can both shoot log and raw on stix but is also a lightweight body that works well handheld and on lighter gimbals, and I already had a couple of Infernos on hand. I'll start shooting my handheld and gimbal using the 10-bit 4:2:2 internal codec and for everything else I'll use the Inferno for monitoring and recording to ProRes HQ now, and then switch to ProRes Raw as soon as Premiere adds support. When I need handheld/gimbal shots or when I need to start capturing everything in UHD, I'm working on finding a solution to strap the Inferno to my torso or thigh. Eventually a smaller light-weight external recorder will be released which can also handle ProRes Raw over SDI, and when that heppens I'll buy one and stick it in my pocket for handheld. If I have trouble pulling focus with the included screen and the focus assist feature, then I'll have to get a lightweight SmallHD. But since I'm starting with 1080p handheld and have shot handheld interviews on a C100 at f/1.2, I'm confident I don't need that right away so the cost isn't of immediate concern.

Every camera will have weaknesses, especially when you're really digging for them. The FS5m2 has an older sensor so I'll have to work around it's weakness in low-light. The FS7 was also beyond my budget, especially with the required upgrade for external raw. Aside from budget issues though, the FS7 also is larger and heavier than I like to work with, and the mark1 doesn't have the auto electronic nd filter--it also has the same generational sensor weaknesses as the FS5m2. The BMD camera's aren't light, and as someone mentioned elsewhere they aren't super rock solid reliable--same for Terra 4K. The C200 can't do external raw and the internal is expensive and limited run-time, with a codec that isn't as friendly as ProRes Raw. The raw export of the EVA1 is limited to 10-bit.

So there you have it. Time to pre-order the FS5m2 w/ Inferno kit.

Thank you but if you had read the conclusions of some of the discussions we had, you would have noticed that one of the conclusions was that adding EXTERNAL things to the FS5 brings you into the pricerange of the FS7. So you may look at the FS7 after all and read the discussions. :)

Amadou, have you thought about shooting with the JVC LS300? As if you're ok with shooting 8bit internal 4K with the FS5, then the JVC LS300 should seriously be on your radar as well. And it is even cheaper! It is a great little affordable S35 cinema camera (it is US$2.5K brand new, and I've seen it go for even US$1.5K secondhand! Although only rarely).

Go ask more here:

(EOSHD also has a small collection of JVC LS300 owners: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/forum/4-eoshd/ Or here: https://www.personal-view.com/talks...gy-ls300-4k-for-2995-gy-hm200-and-gy-hm170/p1 )

Are you serious??? People are being helpful and you are being condescending? You expect everyone to keep up with your redundant, what, 15 open threads so they only tell you what you want to hear and are interested in?
Not cool.

It seemed like there was a similar guy on recently, except he had some $65,000 to spend on an Amira and lights...or a Red.. or ja 7s because he wanted to be discreet...I forget...my version OF Rubbernecking I suppose....seemed equally implausible, but giving the OP in question a stretched benifit of the doubt, don't shoot the movie with the questions you are asking here...presuming this project is real you have some responsibility towards the project...and more importantly those putting up the money, however much or little it is.....or ask for more time....you are not ready to shoot a film...if you are trolling, you are wasting resources of a very valuable forum that truly sorts many issues out for individuals and help others make better decisions

But is ham the best? What about beef? Or chicken? And do we have it with salad or without? Or should the salad have rocket or plain lettuce? I have a major feature to film and I can't find answers to these questions anywhere else and I'm certainly not trolling... and of course we shouldn't feed trolls...

That sounds like me almost a year ago but I didn't open as many threads about it as Amadou. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I was called a troll and attacked for asking questions but I did a lot of research on my own as well.

I think what really bothers people is when during a discussion people criticise the camera that they happen to own.

The stuff with Amadou doesn't bother me. Some of the stuff is informative, some of it funny and some I just skip over if I'm not interested.

p.s. the thread was about spending up to $40,000 for a camera (like an Amira), not $65,000. But that was before the Venice came out. LOL.

I am curious what you decided.

I assume you're asking me?

I remember at the time (about a year ago) someone suggested I wait until the next NAB and see what was new (like an A7S III) but it never materialized.

So, I bought another A7S II.

I'm doing wide and tight shots and dialogue scenes with 2 cameras at the same time and waiting...........

The discussion was short and intensive and I got the information I needed in a few days. Perhaps some people here would have preferred that I stretch it out over a month and ask only a few questions every few days. Well I didn't. Please let me know to whom I must send the official appology letter.

I found some people here were very arrogant in presuming I was trolling around. I have been in the film business for 30 years and have gotten a movie released theatrically with just a Letus and 416 plugged into the EX1. I have also made movies using the Arri BL film camera and Nagra for the audio back in the 90s. I have tested various cameras including the JVC L300 (It has issues). So... excuse me but perhaps I was just going after people's opinions. The fact is I finally picked a camera based on these discussions. If you want to know which one, I could tell you, but insofar as my troll status has removed all credibility to my posts I don't see the point. ...and by the way... anybody who tells you you can't shoot a movie with good sound going straight into thd camera in XLR does not know what he's talking about. I've done it and the dialog sounded great after mixing. So I asked about it to see if the Sound Devices could make things better when going syraight onto camrfa. There are a lot of professionals out there who will tell you anything just to seem important. This said... thank you for those who helped. Bye bye to the troll hunters who undermined the free talk spirit of this forum. You may no return to your regular scheduled programing.
