C200: Sub Recording Useless?

I tend to always shoot RAW on the C200 but its nice to have proxies encase I do a heavy shoot with lots of footage however all the proxies are over exposed. I always try to over expose or get it to a point where its right below peaking aka ETTR but doing this method ruins my proxies. Is this the wrong way to expose an image for RAW Footage?

Are you by chance applying a LUT to the proxies? That would alter the gamma curve between the main iles and the proxies.

You're doing something wrong, not sure what, but I have been shooting two long term docs ALL in CRL with the proxies and the proxies are working great for rough cuts and the sizzle reels.

I have it set to HDR PQ than under SD Card it says REC 709

Edit: I use the Atomos Ninja Flame to get HDR read out.

Hmm...I have not messed with HDR or external recording in 4K, I am only shooting CRL 4K to CFast 2.0 cards. I have shot lots of 1080 to my Ninja Blade for green screen clients who can't deal with RAW and don't want 4K, but that isn't HDR PQ. Sounds like somehow the HDR setting is being embedded in the .MP4 possibly? Or perhaps since you are exposing for HDR, which obviously has a wider dynamic range, perhaps the REC 709 output to the proxies cannot handle the exposure level? Using your HDR PQ setting, are you using exposure tools on the camera or on the Flame to judge exposure? On the camera, what are your levels peaking at when you are shooting this material? Where are your skin tones? Once again, I don't have a Flame or shoot HDR but it sounds like this is the issue.

Work backwards until you find the issue. Turn off the HDR stuff and record some footage to CFast using CRL and record proxy. Look at both and see if the proxy is overexposed. Then add the Flame to the mix, still turning off the HDR, just use REC 709 on the Proxy and process the CRL using Log 2 or 3. See what you get. Then add in the HDR PQ and see what happens. Troubleshooting is just eliminating variables. You have a lot going on there, external recording to a device that has it's own LUT/HDR settings while recording proxy to REC 709 color space which as you know, doesn't have nearly the dynamic range of HDR. I doubt you have an equipment issue, it's probably user error, it is most of the time, especially nowdays when we are dealing with LUTS, HDR, different monitoring on different screens, etc.
