Student One Take Video getting Huge Press

Apparently a bunch of students from Canada have been getting international press for their 'amazing' one take music video to the Black Eyed Peas song... "Tonights gonna be a good night" or what have you.

I think the video is good for intro students and the planning is rather well done, as it's the only real strength of the video... but to be featured on CNN's homepage as a top entertainment news story (for two days) was kinda shocking.

I guess it's me being picky and a little envious of the press (not the product).

Either way, it's obvious the Film students who made this are also minoring in Literalism.

I don't know why, but I like it a LOT, and dislike it a LOT.

I like that they're having fun, but keep it pretty strict on the shots, where they'll be, etc. I like how simple it is, and how it seems "fun" ...

I don't like that it's really not that great. I don't like that they can get away with copyright material on a big scene.

Overall, I can respect anyone that can get that together, though. 170+ people. Crazy.

Honestly I find it ridiculous the stigma that comes with being a "film student", especially on these boards. Yes I am a film student myself, even though I feel like I have a different perspective as I have on set experience, I came in with a few films already under my belt, and I teach myself on the side. Fact is, some people come in not knowing anything, and some come in knowing a lot.

But with that aside, they did a decent job. Yes it's literal, yes it's using copyrighted material, but so what? They had fun, they entertained, and that's what I think all films should do.

I think they should at the very least be praised for their planning. They did a great job on that respect, and they planned it well, keeping us visually stimulated. On top of that they mixed it up, it went somewhere (not just literally), because it developed into something, from outside, to a few people, to the big finally.

Yes there's a stigma that comes with being a film student, but UQAM is considered the top french film school in Montreal. I go to Concordia, I guess a top english film school (or so they say) also in montreal, and I'm proud that UQAM is getting some recognition. I know a few people that go there, that study film there.

i thought they did an excellent job with planning this thing out and making it interesting. props to them for pulling it all together.

on a side note, black eyed peas must have made a deal with the devil. how many stories can news networks pick up about someone lipsynching to their songs? they already had one about a month ago with the kid in the apple store doing the same song.

I think if you're going to put that much effort into something you could get a decent camera operator with an assistant.

*Announcer Voice*: Jon Starr, champion and defender of the intro film student! I kid, I kid.

I think I upset the Canadians, even worse the french ones! :lipsrseal

It's a good intro to video project for a bunch of kids at film school. No doubt. But CNN homepage good? Feel good news piece BS 1o1. At it's terribly cheese and literal. Maybe that's why it's fun. I'm with Hawk... I like it and hate it all at the same time. It's an enigma from the land of enigmas. :cheesy:

I love this thing. I think they did and excellent job, especially for one take.

That was Great! i think it was a lot better than the real black eye peas video. They deserve the credit they are getting. hopefully this will inspire more film students not to be afraid to get a lot of people involved in their productions, let their vision and creativity flow. I don't know about you guys but I am wicked motivated to grab my camera right now and film something.
One thing I particulary like about it is the simplicity. No crazy special effects, multi camera angles, funky filters. Just raw and organic. Not saying I don't like these things (love transformers) but it's nice to have a break from it.

It looks like every single film student participated in the clip and they asked the janitor to shoot it !

I was impressed. The logistics are amazing. Getting that many people is amazing.

There is more to entertainment then steadicams and shot selection.

RE: 'I Gotta Feeling' Lip Sync

That was pretty crappy, IMO. But then again, I don't like the Black Eyed Peas, so maybe the vid's tainted for me just b/c of the song.

That song is HORRIBLE. LOL. I do hate that song so much. Its one of the worst songs to come out in recent times in my opinion.

This one is about 2 year old now but pretty good.

I think it's very impressive when people can pull this stuff off. And for film students, seems like it would teach them a lot about blocking, timing, and discipline.

I think it sais something about the leadership and organizational skills of the creators. Working out the timing, motivating that many people to particpate and have them deliver at the right moment.

A lot of work and passion went into this, not necessarily from the filmmaking standpoint, but from an organizational/leadership standpoint.

It's not something just anyone can pull off. If the creator does not succeed in filmmaking, he/she I'm sure, will do well in the business/managing world in some capacity.

The way I see it anyways.

To add to that , just cause (I'm bad with Friday nights ) , I found 2 girls, no guys, that were any good out of the bunch, back to back mind you, so they may be friends.
