Stuck in the Slow Lane?

So.... sorry if this is a stupid question here, I have tried to enlarge that jpeg and still having problem reading it. It looks like you might be saying that a camera that does not shoot 240 can be recorded at 240 on the 7q. Am I reading that right or....... is it possible to record a higher frame rate that what the camera itself will record?

Sorry, I didn't realize that DVXuser would shrink the image down like that so that the text was not legible.

No, we do not create information where it does not exist. We can only record 240p if a camera outputs 240p.

Here's the complete text:

Stuck in the Slow Lane?

Most cameras and recorders can only shoot up to 30fps. A few can roll up to 60fps and then a handful can crank up to 120fps or even 200fps.

The Odyssey7Q+ can record HD video in Apple ProRes at 240fps.

That's a new record. There are (expensive) cameras that can record HD Apple ProRes at 200fps. Other cameras can shoot high speed but heavily compress the video signal to do so, or they are specialized high speed cameras that are expensive and only record in RAW data.

There are some onboard recorders that capture up to 60fps. Most will only do 30fps. No other device in the world can record HD Apple ProRes at 240fps, and none has ever claimed they will in the future. And that's in HD. In 4K the Odyssey7Q+ can record up to 60fps in Apple ProRes.

The first cameras to be supported for high speed recording are the Sony PXW-FS7 (with the XDCA-FS7 Extension Unit) and the Sony NEX-FS700R. Add the Odyssey RAW Bundle to access the high frame rate outputs of these cameras. On the FS700R the Odyssey can even capture short bursts of 4K120fps. In free firmware updates, Convergent Design will add high frame rate support for more cameras with appropriate outputs.

Still feeling stuck in the slow lane?

Mitch, what's the 240 fps image quality like when recorded with the Odyssey7Q+ ? ( I've only seen internally recorded footage which degraded quite a bit as the frame rate increased )

Here it is in 200fps:

that was in raw though, but guess the ProRes isn't very far off. Since it's both coming from the raw data so you get 10bit 422 and better codec, it should be way beyond internal quality.

This was my quick test from last weekend. I recorded in continuous 200fps ProRes LT on the 7Q+ (using the new firmware), from the 2K RAW out from the FS700. The image was noisy, it seemed more noisy than the AVCHD to me. Given time I may have added some noise reduction, either with Neat or Red Denoiser, but for this quick test I left as is. I shot it in SLog2 and used the CD-provided SLog2 LUT (either the -1 or -2 version depending on the exposure), tweaked here and there.

All of the high speed 2K Apple ProRes (100p, 120p, 200p, 240p) is derived from the 2K RAW output of the camera. This is a sampled signal from the 4K camera sensor. That can mean some artifacting such as a loss of resolving power and some aliasing. The in-camera recording does other things to the video that reduces the image quality more. I would certainly suggest you test it before using it on a paid shoot so that you know what you're in for, but that said it can look quite good.
