C100: Struggling with 60i slow mo conversion in FCP X

I know this has been covered a ton, and don't tell me after effects lol. I used to be able to do this within fcp x but for some reason I can't remember exactly how to get it to work. I've been trying to get it to work by importing the 60i clip, keeping it at upper field first in the info, then conforming to 80% then slowing it down by exactly half of that (40%) but it's not working at all. Hmm...

Why is it EXTREMELY hard to find just a definitive workflow for fcp x for this?! I've literally been searching for 45min for an answer... Nothing seems to be working. Can't remember what i'm doing differently than when I had it working before.

Are you sure the timeline isn't setup to conform to first clip? It has to be a progressive timeline. I known that is a basic question and should be obvious but worth starting there! Also are you on the new 10.1 version of FCPX?

Its simple...

Shoot 60i at 1/120th

In FCPX 10.1 do this.

FIRST. make sure you are set up for a 24p or 30p timeline!

Import your footage and then in the INFO TAB do the following.

1: in the info tab make sure you set Field dominance override select "upper first" (Info tab needs to be set to "settings").
2: click deinterlace in the info tab
3: Drop your footage onto a 24p or 30p timeline
4 in the retime tools select "automatic speed".
5: render and enjoy.

Basically you lose 1/2 the horizontal resolution. But it will still look better than 720/60p coming out of any Hdslr because the C100 sensor is so good.

Ok thanks for that, and yes i've been in a 24p timeline, I will try again following exactly what you said though. Is "automatic speed" the same as just conform speed in 10.9? In the middle of a project so I haven't upgraded to 10.1

Yes, automatic speed is what was conform speed.

I use 50 and 60 frame rates a lot and have set a shortcut for "conform speed" aka "automatic speed". With me it is the "4". so when I want this clip in slomo I press 4 and voila it is conformed to the 25 or 24p timeline. This was a major hassle in old FCP versions (going via cinema tools....).
