strobing/flickering effect

Hey guys

Im making my portfolio for university and part of my footage looks very stroby like. Im not exactly sure why. I lit it properly and used the same shutter speeds as ive used in the passed, only difference is i shot it in squeeze mode and made the size smaller to fit the 4 by 3 ratio. ( even in 16x9 mode, the footage is equally stroby ) shot in 24p

Has anyone else had this problem? i would like to know exactly what created that if anyone knows how to fix it or anything else.

anyways the links here

i don't exactly see what you mean PaPa, i didn't really see any problem with the footage. do you mean the lighting is having a strobe/flickering effect? if so, check your detail settings. the DVX is notorious for the light flickering when detail setting is set on thick i believe....i could be wrong though, but i'm pretty sure i read a million things on that.

no its just its really strobby when i play it back on tv's and my monitor. just as the actors head is going up and down on the brush, its really choppy and when he grabs the toothpaste and so on.

I don't see it either.

Which NLE are you using? About a year ago, I had 24P footage that strobed in Premier Pro, but no where else, not Vegas, not FCP. I spent time investigating, and I thought I read that it was a problem with premier's 24P handling at the time.

Anyway, I didn't look into it further, just stopped using premier. Haven't seen it since.

strobing is normal in 24p. there is nothing you can do about it, except for making your pans much slower. this problem is stated in barry's book. however the strobing you see on the lcd screen is exaggerated to what it looks like on tv.

i dunno though. i mean i know about the panning thing and speed and what not. but the pan i did was not that quick. But played back on a television scree ( on a dvd ) the entire video seems to be very choppy. much choppier then the rest of my footage. hrm

I saw what you were talking about. They are right, this is a 24P thing that goes back to the beginning of time. It is talked about in the "bible" as previously mentioned. The other way to reduce the affecr (besides a slower pan) is to have the camera following an object that the viewers eye would focus (in the center of the picture) on and the affect is diminished. The light background could be exaggerating the effect some too. Just my thoughts on that.

So if this happens even on film cameras... Can someone mention a film I should watch to see it?

I've never noticed it in a film. Never in any DVX footage (though I've only seen the footage on the computer, not on a TV).

Am I just blind and not able to see it or what?

it looks to me like one of two things

1. 24p (not 24pa) in a 23.98 project. believe it or not, 24p footage (scene file f5 on the camera) needs to be edited in a 29.97 project, as it does not implement advanced pulldown. if you put it in a 23.98 project, you will get this "strobing" effect.

2. 24pa footage in a 29.97 project. perhaps you forgot to change your project settings to 23.98

hope that helps. what nle are you using?

I get this very same problem, i think it is an issue with PPro 1.5 there is not much i can do about this chopy look, i have tried it all. The only thing i can think to do is to uprade to PPro 2.0 If you figure it out, let me know!

Papa, I took a look at your footage, and there is indeed something not right, this is not normal 24P strobing. I think this could have come from a number of things, like mentioned above 24PA footage edited as 29.97 footage looks closest to this. This really depends on your editor. If you are using vegas, both 24pN and 24PA footage can be edited on a 24P timeline, but 24PA is more effecient. What editor are you using, what frame rate do you edit in? It really looks like the pulldown is being removed wrong, or not at all.
FOR everyone else, this is NOT what 24P should look like.

thank you lol

so yes, i used 24p, not 24p advanced in adobe premier pro 1.5 and i edited it in a 23. blah blah timeline.

Why is this happening now, ive never had this problem before?

but its strange that it only happened with that section of the footage

here is a link to my portfolio video, the intro, nights lights and momories, and stuck vol2 were shot with the dvx, the rest with a sony handycam

My guess was a timeline problem, but that has already been stated and confirmed.

anyway, that's a really nice portfolio, Papa. I really like your work. And that was a really nice introduction you did as well. :)
