FEATURE: Stricken the Feature - A Matt Sconce Film

Nice. Man, I hope if you have some pr-screeners for feedback, I can get on the list.

We are on target for October. Will start my thread prob next week...

Some more BTS:

Director Matt Sconce and AD Troy Ruff prepare for a two camera shot in a bathroom.

See the little daylight fluorescent on the floor? These were really useful in small tight places in throwing light. The bright light is from another Shocklight sideways on the bathroom counter. Notice the black plastic on the window. I had to totally blackout this whole house FIVE TIMES! (Lots of black plastic and gaffers!)

Matt frames a bedroom shot with grip Andrew holding the monitor. We usually used a monitor stand but in this case we had to flip the bed 180 degrees in the room quickly. He was shooting a closeup and then racking to an actor across the room.

If you go back and watch the short, you will see that we used the same cool brass bed for the feature.

It took around 2.5 hours to tear down that night. We pulled all the stuff to the amazing 1991 Subaru Loyale gripmobile.

I have a motorcycle trailer on the back to hold the large fan, hoses and power cords. Another view: (Yup... It all fits!)

Some simple final greenscreen shots the last night. See the Shocklights? They work so well... and $54 a piece. Whoo hoo! We used a 750W gelled Fresnel for a hair light.

Another dreamy greenscreen shot. Muy mysterioso! I was left holding the fan...

Yay! A wrap! I thought later and was sad that actor David Fine wasn't in this shot.

Thanks to soooooo many who aren't in this shot... Actors and actresses, gaffers, grips, riggers, sound guys, boom operators, cameramen, BTS cameramen, talented DVXUsers, deputies, police officers, paramedics, Avenal Hospital management and staff, and the many who came to help out for just one day of shooting.

I am excited about how well the post is already going!

If we send any out, I will keep you in the loop. Congrats on the imminent launch of your film!

Congrats man! Looks like things went well!

Thanks! Things did go well. Now that we're wrapped, It feels weird. I think it is like the after Christmas blues but on a MASSIVE level. I need to get more time to edit so I feel like I am making progress toward the end game...selling this beast.

I know that feeling. Even though the hours are ridiculous and the headaches are plentiful, you always miss being on set.

There is such an amazing bond that happens when you work with people so closely and in such ridiculous situations.

That's probably why they have POW reunions and army buddies are so close. :D

Note to self...save project every 2.3 seconds! I just lost a minute of dialogue edit due to a crash. Quite disheartening. Tomorrow I will make it back up and continue onward. I am at 1 hr 11 minutes.

What NLE are you using? Is there an autosave feature? I use Pro Tools a lot (which is an audio program, not an NLE, of course) and have it set to autosave every minute. Bailed me out of a lot of grief, that...

I turned off the autosave feature as I thought I would rather not have it interrupt things I am doing, and I was certainly smart enough to save all the time....haha. I am cutting in PPro CS4. I am going right now to edit my life away. All day edit session!!!! Oh...and I am turning on the autosave feature!

I watched the trailer and I have to say this looks really good. Right up my alley. I assume the movie has the same ending as the short did? (yes, I watched the short as well - couldn't help myself)

That short was my first serious attempt at filmmaking and it is cool that the concept became my first attempt at Feature Filmmaking.

I will give a bit away...the Feature goes a completely different direction than the short. It is based on the story loosely, but treads on completely new paths.

Well I got back on that old horse that threw me, turned on auto save and have been editing like crazy. I did get a nap somwhere in there and a Monster as well to keep my eyelids open. I am at 1 hr and 18 minutes now and moving forward little by little. I am at a tricky part to edit and it is taking more time than long dialogue sections. I am liking what I am seeing though!

I am into the Aro, Steph action scene in her parents house. Very fun stuff! I have also been studying MOCHA in AE CS4. WOW it is powerful. I am so glad we have it as it will save the day for tracking the mirrors. I am at 1hr and 21 min of Stricken rough cut.

I think I should write a book about making features on passion alone and the faith of loved ones.
The chapter right now would be: How to keep editing and keep morale up when they shut of your water. Step one...pay water bill....to get money for water bill, sell kidney....well maybe that is a bit extreme. Anyway, I definitely know what a starving artist feels like. I am blessed to have so many people believing in me. I will succeed, and look back on these days as character defining moments that shaped me and my family into who we have become. I will keep moving forward one step at a time. If I do not settle, and finish this thing, then it will all have been worth it.

I know how ya feel, only for me it's the electricity (which makes editing a bit more difficult). Keep pushing through!

Well, crazyness happened tonight but I got to work on the computer a bit anyway. Something amazing occurred....MY VIDEO CARD FINALLY CAME IN!!! I have been waiting for the card to arrive since I ordered it on the 20th of JULY! First Journey Ed lost me cashiers check "Said it didn't arrive". I tracked it and told them which one of their employees signed for it. They said Oh, it is here...it was misplaced. Then they proceeded to give me myriads of responses as to why the drop shipper for the card had not shipped yet (Always nice people on the phone but NOTHING ever happening to ship my card. Finally they said there had been an error and that it had appeared to have already been taken care of when it was not, so the shipping info finally was sent. a week later. My card arrived.

It is the Quadro CX Optimized for CS4. It spanks my other card. It is huge. Here is a Pic.

I ran a test and it blows everything I have ever used away. Hooray!

I am currently rendering out some RED footage out of Red Cine and am going to bed. Goodnight!

Now I have this vision of Matt sitting at his computer, pressing "Enter" on some formerly processor-crippling task, and then cackling like a madman as it happens in, like, a second... : )

Quite close to reality except there really is more of a Zombie grunt instead of a cackle. Lack of sleep has caused the cackle to subside.
