FEATURE: Stricken the Feature - A Matt Sconce Film

Thanks Huy! I was the sound pole guy for the first weekend and your amazingly light pole was a blessing.

No problem, glad that you guys are getting some used out of it. Also, if you guys need me for a weekend or something as crew I'd love to come and give a hand.

You are welcome anytime! Huy! I will send you the weekends. Shoot me a pm with your e-mail and I will e-mail it to you. That goes for all of you DVXusers! You are always welcome. We can put you up on our couch! I think Mark Johnson and some Fat Monster Crew will be coming out sometime as well. -Matt:thumbsup:

Hey everyone! I have been getting good feedback from people based on the grabs I posted, but I want to get a different take.

Could you tell me which grab is your favorite composition and why? Which one works best for you? It helps me to see how the compositions impact a viewer. Thanks guys! -Matt Sconce

I would say 11 and 13. They are both well composed, and I like the depth in them.

Thanks for your feedback Jason! :)

UPDATE: Tomorrow and Saturday are two more production days. I will be shooting my first mobile car scene as well as a lot of the rest of the shots at the first location. -Matt

Again, I really like your grabs Matt. All of them look textured and three dimensional save for 7 & 10. These two appear a bit flat due to the lack of shadow and directional light. The bartender is lit too evenly causing the look of the shot to not be as pleasing or interesting as the others. Same for the one of the protagonist with the knife.

Good luck this weekend. Looking forward to following this project. The short version was outstanding.

Thanks! That help a lot. Thanks for the props on the short. It had a lot of legs and helped me follow through on the feature script. It is neat to see scenes that are similar to the short, being shot now. I know so much more than I did then, and feel I am a much better director and cinematographer so it is like seeing the short on steroids. After my brain almost exploded from wrangling all the scenes in continuity order with my AD and the shoots run 2 hours over, it helps to see the footage looks sweet and that the sound worked well. Gives me hope.

I can't believe the last time I talked to you was when you were in preproduction on this. Congratulations man, keep fight the good fight!

The ones that stand out to me are # 3 and 11.
11 for the emotions and depth, and 3 for the luscious skin and lighting in an evocative pose.

A couple of the others look a little too "lit" for my taste, but probably fixable with CC.

Thanks! Yep, I always overlight the scenes that will go darker to avoid noise on the HVX. It is a trick that I can use since I know the CC that will occur on the frames. For instance. The scene in the short where Stephanie sits up from bed and lightning flashes was lit like the sun with tungsten. But it looks extremely dark and moody in the final pass. :) -Matt

Hey! Actually, the last time we were hanging out, I was shooting the short version of this. Since then it went to festivals and then I wrote a feature script due to the interest in it and courted investors for 1 1/2 years until finally launching into making the feature myself. Craziness!

I have been playing with some looks for Stricken and here are three color grading tests. For some reason I could not find the place to host them here on dvxuser so I had to host them on myspace, which caused some detail loss in the images.

Woohoo. Shooting is a blast on small indie features without tons of stress! Hey, you never mentioned who donated an HVX200, a Brevis flip, tripod, Nikon Primes, a crane replacement for the difficulties you had with the other crane, etc.

Good luck on this Matt! I've been through the whole thread and see no list of your crew. You ought to give a shout out to them...

Some grabs from last weekend's shoot. I am totally drained and need to recover before this upcoming weekend. It is going well though! -Matt

Great guys like Shane help because they are just naturally talented and awesome. (Not to mention handsome and highly intelligent.) :) BTW, Shane, we took your tool box and crane head to Matt's house to protect them.

Tonight when we struck the house set I was astounded at all of the stuff we have now. It was the first time I have seen it all in one place. Anybody have a 20' box truck you don't want? (For free, Hehehehe)

I was watching the BTS of Episode III Star Wars and we actually do most of what they do but on a semi-microscopic scale. I love indie film making! Making Stricken is so much fun already!

New grabs looking good! Get some rest, then keep on trucking!

Thanks! The film is turning out wonderfully. it is all in the preparation....and in the talent and crew. Without the planning we have done for this, it would be no where near what it is. I have a great cemetery scene coming up on the 19th and a driving scene the 18th. David Fine comes back up May 15th. May 9th we wrap the house location a lot of the stills are from. I am working on a teaser now.:dankk2:

Hey Matt, have not been through the whole thread, but was wondering if you ever discuss your plan for the film. Did you go into this prod with an idea of how you want to get it out there? AFI? Festivals? Care you comment on that aspect?
