Strange vertical lines stuttering on Canon 550D

Stick with 1/50. You're not going to notice any difference with the issues you think you're having with finer adjustments.
 
I've done a test shoot toward a white wall at different shutter speeds. When you use a high shutter speed you will see a few faint vertical black lines across the image, I can confirm your problem too. I have footage proving this and can post up next week. I still like my 7d though.
