Strange method of shooting 16.9

Hey guys,
Not sure if this belongs in the "technical" forum, but I couldn't really think of a better place.

We're about to begin production on a short film this weekend, shot on the DVX. Shooting 24p (obviously), but 4x3, then cropping for 16x9. I decided in order to help my DP frame the shots for 16x9, I cut out a piece of transparency paper (just thin, clear plastic), and dropped it in the popout LCD. It fits great, and the static actually holds the paper in, even when upside down and closed.
I'm going to draw out bars for the top and bottom with black marker, so the shot will be framed correctly.

My question is, does anyone know an easy way to measure out these bars? I want them to be relatively exact, so without spending too much time, does anyone know how to measure out exactly where the bars would be?

Thanks for the help, if this works out, I think it will be a pretty effective way of marking for 16x9.

I think he wants 16:9 Derrick, not 2:35:1. I guess without actually buying a screenskin, my best suggestion would be...

The circles on an smpte countdown leader (the Premiere Pro Countdown Leader) indicate the Screen aspects.

The Inner Circle is 1:185
The Outer Circle is 1:166

export that image to your LCD and tape it off accordingly.

great, thanks guys... i did do a search, went back through 3 pages and didn't see that one.

thanks though, i'll be making some tonight, probably using the premiere method, since i already cut mine out.

Unfortunatly the camea's own "Letterbox" is not true 16:9

Your best bet is in deed to make a 4:3 video clip that has a 16:9 lettbox in it in your NLE and export that to your camera & LCD.

Yeah, but it's close enough. If your framing is so exact that a pixel or two here or there will screw it up...you might want to consider reframing. :)
