Stormy look

Thats the best one yet! Thats EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

How did you do that?

Desaturation, adjusted gamma, isolate and darken sky highlights, replace color on sky, blue overlay, color burn, inverted clouds, levels, and curves.

That's alot easier than actually replacing the sky IMO and it preserves the original image.

Noice.

If it's a pretty steady shot you can create a mask based off a single frame. I would take a frame into photoshop use the wand to create a feathered selection. Save that as a grayscale image and use it as a alpha matt.

Or as mentioned earlier if you can get a solid blue sky you can key that out - using a mask to limit the effect to the sky and replace it that way. That will give you the best results IMO.

Is there anyway to do that without screwing up the trees though?

With DV footage frame sizes, not really. If you were working with higher rez scans, you would have a lot more to work with.

An even bigger problem would be movement. If the trees are moving in the wind, then you have to rotoscope, and that, compounded with leaves AND branches would be a nightmare. You could do it to a degree, but it would simply not look right.

You could take the picture you have now and project it onto a 3D scene, which would allow you to recreate not only movement of trees, but also camera pan and dolly (to a suprising degree), and that would be much eaiser. You could then work entirely from a still, and animate it as you want. Throw in some extra elemets like particles for dust, and displacement maps in a NLE for leaf movement and cloud changes and you could do some nice work. http://www.newtek.com/products/lightwave/tutorials/rendering/camera_mapping/camera_mapping.html

Simplest and best would be to recreate all the shots entirely. House, trees, sky, lawn, horizon/background, all seperate elements, prefereably digital photos of medium/high rez. THen you have complete control.

Of course, if you wanted to simply set up a camera and shoot, look at tweaking existing elements in the scene to taste, with little camera movement.

Lighter with cloud movement

Lighter with cloud movement

Here is a lighter overcast look. Once again the boards are removed. I trimmed the trees as well because the clouds moving in the background caused a problem with the super thin branches. I agree this would have to be a very high resolution shot and each piece would need to be compositing in seperately into photoshop, before adding the clouds. For now, I am pleased with this look. I definitely think it appears a storm is about to break. It could rain any minute!

holy **** birds, after effects can do this much crap? I had no idea, mudder of gad!

I really like the replacement in your first clip but i think the clouds are moving too fast.

Dl'ing the second one now.

In the second one, I think the rain is too long. Shorten it up, and if you could apply some blur to rain, make it layered and look like theres more depth. It kinda looks like a flash animation with a rain layer in the front.

Also, the lightning strike is cute, but wholly unrealistic looking. If you had it happen behind the house, it would look ominous, and probably more realistic.

But you seem really talented! I'm jealous!

hehe thanks! I didn't have enought time to spend on this to sell it, so I just went for a cool colorful look. Thanks for the comment about the rain! I have a couple other ideas for some tweaks in after effects also.

I'm sure that if msconce had enough time it'd look alot better. But, for something quick, that does look pretty decent.

Just makes me feel better about adding effects to shots that I'm going to have to do.

Great job on helping him with his stormy look guys.
