What is the best solution for saving P2 footage. We have shot about 38 hours worth of footage in DVCPro HD. We have it on TB drives now, but would like a less expensive solution.

Are there any external drives that you can buy a new drive and stick it in once you fill up another?

There are a ton of external drive enclosures that use caddies -- you'd simply buy additional hard drives and caddies as needed, and put whichever drive you want to access into the enclosure. Icy Dock is just one option.

Hi,
we just received 2.0TB LaCie Ethernet (gigabit) Nas Raid, the one introduced at CES (is a demo unit), it has 4x500GB but we're going to put the 750Gb or wait for the 1TB Hitachi/Segate ones. It's the best solution for us as you can share trough your local network with other computers and even more. It has RAID 5 and more. It cost about 1.000 euro so it is cheap consideraing the hardware. You can even configure it as a server. I'll let u know how the performance is after we install it and tested!

We store about 4 terabytes of digital video (SD rather than HD) online. We've used both the Buffalo Terastation arrays and a custom-built RAID array that we assembled from component parts.

For just storage, the Terastation works quite well, is redundant (RAID 5) and a pretty good value. BUT it's software RAID, so it does not do well as a drive to edit from or render to.

For editing and rendering, we built a RAID-5 array using the Adaptec 2820SA RAID hardware RAID card and 4 - 750 gig Seagate SATA drives in a dedicated machine running Linux. It didn't work worth a crap running Windows XP, but when we converted it to Linux, it's run flawlessly, and it can handle being both the source and target for a scene being edited and rendered from 2 machines simultaneously.

The custom-built machine cost all in about $2500 and gives us a 3TB (unformatted) array that's lightning fast. The closest commercial product I could find was over $5000. The Adaptec card we used will actually support 4 more drives, so we will be able to add a 2nd array (or just expand the first one) when the first array fills up.

Hope that helps.
