Storage and backup for a big library

We're going to be moving to a tapeless workflow with either the 200 or 500. Based on the bandwidth of DVCPRO HD we'll probably shoot and created about 3TB of footage and final output this year.

That's a lot.

I need to back it all up. We're building a library and will need to access footage from that near-line if not on-line.

Attached to our edit system we'll have a 4TB Raid array as a JBOD. Somehow we'll need a system to get our footage archived and taken off that drive.

I've looked at rev pro by iomega as a stopgap.

I've looked at the quantum 600a SDLT as a great option but at 15k CDN, not worth it.

I've considered Network Storage, cheaper, but I need to build a backup for that storage and that makes it expensive again.

Blueray is too slow. DVD is not an archive medium. And copying it to SATA hard disks is not terribly expensive but it is untested for archiving. There is no guarantee.

Basically I need a solution that has some kind of guarantees to it. Has anyone come up with an elegant way to archive?

LTO is your best option. There are some that run t cheaper than 15k can. Try looking at the Dell LTO-2or lto-3 external tape drives. They run about 1k and up.

Thanks for the advice. LTO looks like a real solution. Some are about 1500 dollars. As long as we have a set backup schedule we could archive on a fairly cheap SAN.

At about 3Tb a year, that's probably only 3k at most for having our footage archived.

I'm surprised how little information there is about this workflow. Figuring out a workable catalogue for all those mxf files is an even greater challenge.
