Storage Advice

Hello all. I currently work in a small group where we produce :30 TV for a car dealership. We have a 2.5 TB Xserve RAID from three years ago. Very fast but noisy and hot. I see a new crop of big desktop drives that have impressive speed, but wasn't sure the minimum speed I need.

We make the spots in Final Cut and output SD to BetaSP. We now shoot DCVPro50 with the HVX. I know the RAID we have uses Fibre to get the speed, and the claim is a max of 400/mbs. These new drives claim transfer rates from 55/mbs on up.

I'm thinking our Xserve RAID is overkill and it would be nice to remove the bulk, heat and noise in our new, SMALLER space. How much speed do I really need?

Thanks.

eSATA enclosures with SATA II drives will be plenty adequate.

Get an eSATA card. Get two dual bay eSATA enclosures. Get 4 500 gig SATA II HDD's (if you need the space. Run it all in a raid 0. That's 2 TB's of storage. eSATA will be plenty adequate for editing and capturing DVCPRO HD footage.
