Stop bitching about 25p already, it has it

The bitching has started because it seems that 25p can't be extracted from 50i ala the GH1.
As this is information from a pre production camera, it is speculation, just as the same speculation was around at the GH1 launch, until the first cameras hit the streets and we all became a little wiser.

So has Phill Bloom tested a PAL camera then?

"The Gh2 is very interesting, it’s much improved over the Gh1 but the 24mbs bit rate is only available in 24p mode. The 25p mode is still the inadequate 17mbs mode. I told the guys there today they need to fix that as in Europe we need 25p bit rate equal to the 24mbps"

Shuddap yerself ;-)
17mb 25fps mode (its states actually 50i on the official panasonic site)
This may change...they ought to.

im glad to hear bloom say it performs better in low light....but by how much...hmmm...still banding? lets hope not.

if only someone had shot underexposed footage at pana stand.

Sounds like Mr. Bloom is referring to the de-interlaced contents of the GH2's 1080i50 mode. But if we are to believe Panasonic's online documents, the 50i mode scans the sensor at 50fps. That would not produce progressive 25p video wrapped in a 50i stream. It would produce a 50i stream of interlaced frames, each with half of the 1080 vertical resolution.

So first it was "boohoo no 25p", now it suddenly is "boohoo no 24mb/s at 25p", when will you learn it is supposed to be "boohoo no 1080p50" ;)

I do not belive in so fast and sudden change.
Looking at footage that I have it is clearly 50i footage.
Most probably it is some sort of misunderstanding or just very fast testing.

If they'll change 50i to 25p it'll be stupid decision, as consumers prefer 50i because it produces better footage in amateur style shooting.
It is good to add 25p and especially 50p. But 50i must remain.
Same thing for 17Mbps. consumers need this. But they must add higher bitrates as selectable options.
And, as we don't have CABAC implemented, it is better to be 21Mbps,24Mbps and 32Mbps options.

It looks like there is banding in the pictures from the tv, I guess there could be many reasons for that other than the camera producing them.

No, I think it's clear he says the euro version has 25p.

Someone commented:

"Philip, by all accounts there is no 25p on GH2. There is interlaced 50i, but who needs that? Maybe you can do a little more wispering in Panasonic’s ear …"

His reply:

"there is, but it’s 17mbps …only on EU version no US version"

So either there is truly 25p or Philip Bloom got it wrong.

Before he uploads actual footage and we'll check it in stream analyzers we can't be sure. Looking at 50i on modern TV or monitor with deinterlacer could make him think that he see 25p.
All known 1080 raw footage is either 1080p24 or 1080i50.

Get your facts right before commenting matey. Besides if I wanted 50p id go for the tm700.

No boohoo-ing from me Im a happy gh1 owner (and using 25p thanks to the hack)...the only one boohoo-ing will be panasonic as I wont be buying a GH2 till they fix it

post a file, 10-20secs would do for analysis? post in anywhere or send it to somebody who can post it. Fixed ISO, 1600, Manual 1/50sec .

they giveth and taketh in equal measure

Thank you and I hate you Panasonic:furious3:

Yeah, the first publicly available 1080 file (shot by Andrew Reid at Photokina) is 1080/50i, not 25PsF. Unless P. Bloom got a camera with revised firmware that shoots 25PsF in some other mode, I think he didn't run the 1080 output through the full suite of tests when making that judgement.

No 25p at the highest bitrate (assuming that turns out to the case) is obviously not an issue for everyone, but I am hoping Philip Bloom, Vitaliy and others will persuade Panasonic to offer a firmware update so I can use a GH2 to shoot either 25p or 50p at up to 24mbps. I will accept it if this is only offered in 720 and not full HD, but I do want 24mbps. Otherwise, sadly it's no sale as far as I am concerned.

Wat is their thinking not to offer 24mps

Wat is their thinking not to offer 24mps

in all settings, this amazes me too, why cant they run 720p at 24mps and 1080i, what is the big deal?

I think Panasonic is just trying to get everyone to move towards as few standards as possible. It costs them money to support so many formats. They probably did a cost analysis on it and said most film based movies are shot in NTSC countries so we will just offer 24p and let the PAL countries use 1080i if they really feel like they need 25p.

Maybe this is a good thing? Maybe now everyone will just start using 24p instead of using two formats that are so close together? Since most of this footage will be edited on computers it shouldn't matter what frame rate it is at.

The computer programs can handle any frame rate now and your display device should be refreshing way faster than 25 FPS anyway. 24 FPS will display just fine on a 50 HZ display. As long as the display has a refresh rate more than double that of the source you won't be able to tell the difference.
