Stolen Equipment by a fellow filmer... Is it worth calling the cops? (orlando beware)

He actually contacted me through craigslist. He wanted to hire me as a B camera shooter.

I have been trying to sell my letus to buy a T2I and I had it for sale on craigslist. or maybe he got my email from the Dvxuser.com marketplace ad.

He asked if he could rent it. I was hesitant. Over the next couple days he would contact me making small talk asking how he could get into filming wakeboarding and such. I talked to him like any other normal person with no idea he was a scammer.

so this week he texted me saying he would pay me 800 for a shoot thursday. but he needed to "rent" the letus tuesday for another shoot. I was lured in by the 800 on thursday and went for it. He then text me tuesday saying he wanted to rent all my gear for Wednesday. I told him there was no way I would rent all my gear out. I said I would come to the shoot on Wednesday with the gear. Well he started getting mad and wouldn't respond after that.

Later that night after repeated attempts to contact him and sending messages to him Via facebook he contacted me saying he sent a PA to drop off the Letus. Well we know how that went.

He texted me this morning once again saying he doesnt have my Letus but has my p2 card still that he would give me. So now I am trying to get him to my house to give me the p2 card...

Make sure that when he arrives at the meet, there are one or two peace officers waiting with you, to meet him. If he actually shows, it may be your last opportunity.

Alternately, make sure to get his license plate #s (assuming he shows up in a car) so that you have *something* to give the police.

Of course you had him sign a receipt and give you a copy of his driver's license before allowing him to take the equipment, so you should be covered. Right?

Yikes, let us know what happens with this. Sorry about your stolen gear. I just googled him and found all the other scams he's done. That sucks.

A lot of police departments won't aggressively pursue scamsters if the value of the scammed stuff is below a certain amount...

Since you have the electronic communications, it seems they could trace the IP of the email and find where he has been logging into email, maybe pinpointing his location...

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH I hate scammers. I hope he shows up to give you the p2 card and maybe "slips" on his way out the apartment.

You know what? Skrew the quotation marks. If this is the guy thats been doing all this stuff. Just pop him square in the mouth.
