Stock Footage Swap

There has been talk in a recent post regarding swapping stock footage. I think this is a great idea.
Any ideas on best execution ...and implementation?

Re: Stock Footage Swap

Maybe we can start a thread that is for NO REPLIES but for a STOCK FOOTAGE LISTING only? Each reply is basically a description and type of file?

And for the people who have the ability to host they can put a still frame or a small vid on-line. If they like it then contact the owner of the vid and work out swap terms or monies...

Re: Stock Footage Swap

I wonder if Jarred would give us an entire thread devoted to Stock Footage?

And then, each TOPIC in the thread would have what you were looking for?

SAN DIEGO - CITY LIFE - NIGHT

Yes! Def with Frame grabs and the footage for those who can have the footage hosted!

Re: Stock Footage Swap

Well, transporting it might be an issue. On tape? As data on DVD? I kind of had this in mind when I posted a question as to how best to save 24pA footage in the Vegas area, but no one replied . . .

Re: Stock Footage Swap

Right. I'm thinking it'll pretty much have to be "uncompressed" DV to be useful. If it's saved as data in 24pA on a DVD, that'll fit what, about 18-20 minutes of footage?

Vs. 60 minutes on a mini-DV cassette?

Still, three DVDs are about the same price as a cassette, so I guess, financially, it's a wash.

Of course, we all together could form a stock footage co-op to rival Artbeats.

Re: Stock Footage Swap

... we're talking original material shot by us on the dvx, right? As opposed to swapping our rights-managed or royalty free libraries...

Re: Stock Footage Swap

Yes, original stuff shot by us (at least that's what I had in mind.) We're all over the place -- why not take advantage of it? And when we have a library among ourselves, why not sell it to the unwashed masses?

Re: Stock Footage Swap

I also hope to get some good footage in and around Kennedy Space Center while I'm in Florida . . .

Re: Stock Footage Swap

Now, I know it goes without saying that those of us who will be part of this co-op won't be spreading this footage around without permission . . . doesn't it?

Excellent Point. I am not a lawyer, I think a simple 1 time usage contract between parties could easily be created.
And also I'm sure your not going to be putting you best footage up for auction or swapage...

I sold my footage that was 15 years old and Getty Images bought it. I get my royalty check and asside from the initial shooting...that is all it has cost me and it paid off itself quickly. So yeah doing this idea is fun and good.

Another big advantage is that we are all using the same camera. If possible it would be great to add frame rate info etc. Have an anamophic section.

Re: Stock Footage Swap

Well, if it's going to be useful, it'll have be good stuff, even if not the "best."

It's not that tough. The tough part is enforcement.

Re: Stock Footage Swap

A danger, I think, comes from someone logging in and registering simply to get the footage for free. There should be a screening process of some kind.

Re: Stock Footage Swap

I agree.

Maybe until they contribute actual footage they have to pay a small fee?

I dont know...

Thinking out loud.

Re: Stock Footage Swap

Considering that first post was TODAY, we've been talking about this for a WHILE, and he hit a number of points all in one post that we've taken several days to flesh out, I, too, think not.

Not sure what to do about the security yet.  It may be that we have to go offline to do the swapping, but make mention of it within the DVXUser membership . . . bring someone in when they're able to contribute and we're pretty sure they're "one of us"? (gabba gabba!)

Also thinking about loud.

At the same time, it's easy to see how something like this could get out of hand in various ways.

I don't think I'd even consider using footage unless it wall at least full rez DV. As it is currently unpractical to 'swap' files of this size over the internet, the only really viable solution would be to send each other footage on media of some sort (tape, DVD, etc.) via snail mail. As such, there are going to be costs involved-- media, shipping, time (to package and mail out footage).

Due to all the different costs involved, the best way to go about this is for terms to be agreed upon solely between the owner of the footage and the individual interested in the footage. Perhaps these terms could be based off of guidelines set forth here in this forum. I don't think "outsiders" getting our footage would be a problem. And besides, if they're willing to pay, cool :).

At any rate, who's to determine who is or is not part of this community? New members have just as much potential for useful footage as long-time members.
