Sticking an iPad screen protector onto the O7Q…

…works!

i tried it yesterday, with a cheap $ 10 screen protector from „Anker“ sold via Amazon.

the steps are pretty obvious and straight forward, but just in case:

- remove all dust with the supplied cloth
- see how clean it got!
- remove remaining dust particles with a blower, and if needed a small amount of glass cleaner
- remove the disposable film off the new protector
- put the adhesive „back“ side onto the odyssey’s screen protector
- try to apply it from the middle to the outside to prevent bubbles
- press out any remaining bubbles with the supplied card, again from the middle to the oudside.
- cut the protector with a sharp knife (be careful!)
- again, press out the remaining bubbles, from the middle to the oudside.
- peel off the front film
- happy non-reflective shooting :)

attached are a few pics of how i did it... and how awesome it works outside and a before/after comparison. the last pic is for reference, to see how "bright" it was - the sun had already set, but it was still bright. The improvement is pretty darn good IMO.

Wouldn't it be easier to trace it and then cut it before sticking it to the screen so you don't risk accidentally gouging, knicking or cutting the actual screen or chassis? And put some tape on the outer protective layers so you can still separate them off of the actual protective film, though.

Normally you would get a piece of paper, trace around the edge of the bezel with a pencil, then cut out the paper for a template.

What I have done for some tablets is to measure and draw the shape in CAD, print that out and cut to make sure it fits right, then cut out the protector. Or send the CAD files to the screen protector manufacturer and ask them to cut it and price it for me. Works out good for them because then they can advertise that they have a protector for XYZ device.

This reminds me, I need to get a protector for my Lilliput 7 inch monitor before I wreck it.

We have finally sourced a proper anti-glare screen protector. Product will be coming to us in a few weeks and we will make it available as an accessory item. The Odyssey7Q+ will continue to ship with the current screen protector as it maintains the rich blacks and accurate colors of the OLED screen. We certainly understand the need to fight reflections in exterior viewing, and are happy to soon have this solution available for our clients.

Or you can try this Amazon iPad solution, but you're doubling up screen protectors.

Sure, this is just one way to do it, and if you're careful and know how to cut without hurting anything beside the new protrctor, it works.

Great to hear, Mitch. Are you saying the protector you're providing will mess with the way colors/blacks appear?

Any matte finish screen protector will reduce contrast and desaturate colors. It is by definition what they do. To see the absolute blacks and deep colors of an OLED display, a clear, full transmissive screen protector must be used. It is scatters light coming in from the outside then it will also scatter some that is coming through from the screen.

you forgot to mention: in an ideal environment.
I am mostly far form an ideal environment and with a lot of reflections I don't see absolute blacks and deep colors either. It's worth a try anyhow.

Understood, which is why we will offer a solution as well.

will you offer a mate screen protector with printed marks to replace the original one or will it be on top?

@stefanhuberfilms: that was a great idea, thanks for sharing. My cutting wasn't that perfect as yours but it works still and the edges are protected by Olof's hood. The overall visibility is way better now even if there's a loss in deep colors. Thanks, mate!

edit:
if you try this set, be careful with the "dust removal sticker" It will lift of the original film.

Our solution will be a replacement to the original screen protector, complete with silk-screen printing for all the connectors and controls.

Yea, did the same a few months ago -- works great!

*just be careful, as one of the times I slid it into my pack, the raised edge of the new screen protector caught, and pulled off the base printed one too... And in the same movement, I managed to bend them both in half... So neither work now because I creased them (static won't hold unless perfectly flat), and I've got tape marking the Ins/Outs til that new CD one gets released. User error for sure, but extra caution when doubling up, and it no longer sits below the raised protective edge on the 7Q
